Our first night in Venice and the restaurant was near our hotel and had great reviews with TA. It opened at 7:00 PM when we arrived and by 7:45 was packed with locals and tourists. The menu was diverse filled with many choices. Our food and service were outstanding. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

We were a bit unlucky with our food experiences throughout our Venice visit, but luckily we ended up at this trattoria our last night. Funny and helpful service kept the mood light and cheerful. The food was very good, though the portions of the main courses were a little small (especially the ravioli) as we only had a main and... More

The food is amazing, featuring lots of local ingredients. The bar is well-stocked and well-run. The atmosphere is cool and fun, with a lively mix of visitors and locals. And Jonny, born in Canada but with a Venetian soul, is a warm, engaging, professional host. If sardines are on the starter menu, order them—and if you're used to those tiny,... More

We had our 7th wedding anniversary dinner here. Close to our apartment so convenient. We shared the mixed sea food starter which was lovely: octopus, smoked salmon, sardines and crab. Followed by the risotto for two, a dish that never looks the prettiest but the prawns were sweet and e dish tasty. We then shared a tirramasu, not sure if... More

My partner and I enjoyed our evening at trattoria da Johnny and there are typically Venetian dishes on offer. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. However, we thought that for the price, the attention to detail in each of the dishes wasn't there.

I had the sardines followed by risotto with scallops and I can say that both courses were average and very bland. My husband had the cod with polenta which also didn't have much taste. Service was ok but could have been better. Not sure why this has received such rave reviews.

Yes the location is a bit hard to find but it is well worth it and a bit of getting lost in Venice. The restaurant is the only business in a small piazza with tables and umbrellas in/outside. The service was excellent with information, preference and suggestions. My son's Juventus shirt quickly identified the staff as anti Turin football fans... More

This isn't a tourist place, off the beaten track and well worth finding. We stayed at the Hotel Gabriella on the Riva Degli Schiavone on the lagoon. The restaurant is 0.2 of a mile away down narrow winding alley ways. GPS got us there with no problem. It's a small, lovely little place with outstanding food and service. The waiters... More

Trattoria da Jonny was recommended to us by our hotel. Well worth a visit if you are in the castello area of Venice. But make sure you book in especially if you want to sit outside. Food was stunning, we had a lovely meal here and wasn't as expensive as many places in Venice. Would definitely recommend to others looking... More

This is a true gem in Venice. The location is on a small quiet square tucked away from the livelier tourist streets. We shared a parmigiana melazane as a starter, it was lovely. As main course we had the pistachio crusted tuna served on a bed of fennel and capers - absolutely delicious - and the monkfish cooked to perfection.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
