Venice is very difficult to get good honest food at an honest price. Al Cantinon is an excellent osteria trattoria away from the masses of tourists serving extremely high quality and well prepared fare in a relaxing comfortable environment and at just price. Highly recommended.

My wife and I ate there on June 8th, 2020. It was a major wedding anniversary, of which we did not alert the staff.
It is an intimate restaurant, and the music played was all about love. We wanted a light red, and our waitress recommended a Tai Rosso Piovene. It turned out to be the perfect accompaniment for the Spaghetti Neri and the special Gnocchi made with Ricotta and vegetables. Both dishes held the essence of the sea, in fragrance and taste.
I had the Venetian Veal Liver and my wife had the slow-cooked Octopus. Both were exceptional. It was a night to remember.
The cook is fairly young and seems quite dedicated to his craft. A small restaurant giving a memorable experience. I would highly recommend it.

My wife found this hidden gem in a travel guide, and it was a real delight. The manager graciously set up an extra table for us outside (highly recommended) and soon made us feel at home. We got half a liter of the house white, which was perfectly good with the food. Go for the gnocchi with seafood for a primo piatto! Then we shared a sea bass (branzino) which must have been caught that morning. Not cheap but well worth the money!

Everything the reviews say and more. We were staying 50 feet away at the Suites alla Maddalena (which by the way is an excellent alternative to traditional hotels) in Cannaregio and were lucky to book a table our last night. Would have eat there every night. The scallop appetizer was a thing of beauty and very tasty. The rabbit rolled in porchetta was very nice. You expect good fresh fish in Venice but the bass with roasted tomatoes, potatoes... was perfect - succulent, not dry and fresh as can be. Also very much enjoyed this chef's take on the classic Venetian liver and onions - superb! Service was fairly good even though they were completely full of happy. diners. Overall bill was a tad high but the quality was excellent.

We had tasting menu 75€ per person. All the dishes were very good but nothing special. It didn’t feel a tasting menu and for that I was very disappointed.
Food seemed to be put on the dish without a logic and the quantity of the entries was poor.

OsteriaAlCantinon
Good morning Francesco, choosing a tasting menu in a restaurant is first and foremost a matter of trust and interest in the professionalism of the chef who has selected the dishes he considers most interesting and enjoyable for the customer. It is a guided gastronomic experience, proposed by a professional and built on precise matching criteria.
Perhaps your expectations of the concept of a tasting menu were different and we suspect that you confused our proposal with something resembling an "all you can eat" dinner.
We would like to thank you for the beautiful pictures of our dishes; true testimony to our passion for catering and the quality of our service.

This is a very nice Osteria on a backstreet in Venice where few people pass only by chance. The modern interpretation of traditional dishes and the selection of outstanding wines show the passion of the young owners running this pittotesque little place. Nothing was missing here, when we enjoyed it all with very friedly service. Definitely another favorite on our list to return to frequently..!

We had a lovely meal here and made in a very traditional venetian style. Fresh seafood and wonderful pasta. The service was great very personable. Easy to find and a great quiet location. If you want to sit outside you do need to made reservations. We were able to walk in right when they opened but had to sit inside but it was quite lovely. We ordered the octopus grilled which was amazing for an appetizer and the crunchy egg highly recommended.

This place looked great, and the reviews were all fantastic (as one can see below) so I thought this would be a great place to take my mother for her 60th birthday.
One of the starters we ordered -- the fish carpaccio with the raspberry was inventive, beautifully plated and really very delicious, so we were excited for things to come. The other starter was a meat carpaccio, which wasn't bad, but not worth discussing, either.
Then came the disappointments, one after the other: the ravioli that seemed like those out of the bag left in the cooking water for 4 minutes too long, topped with a spoonful of watery broth and some cubes of zucchini boiled in it. There was another pasta dish topped with beef tartar, which was interesting enough, but also far too soft.
The eel was muddy tasting, unappetizing and frankly, just terrible. Definitely don't get the eel.
But the crowning glory of this otherwise only 'pretty bad' meal was the apparently famous double-cooked octopus: it was so very, very dry that you couldn't cut it with the knife provided; it had to be shred like overcooked brisket. Terrible, terrible, and an offense to the poor octopus.
Going by all the stellar reviews, I can only assume we went on the wrong day (even though I saw the chef there, so it wasn't his day off), but I would most certainly not try again or recommend it to anyone. We have had such fantastic meals during our stay in Venice, it was a massive bummer, to say the least, that my mother's milestone birthday had to be the one terrible experience.

Just delightful- there are a few tables outside by a quiet canal so you are away from the crowds. The food is inventive and beautifully prepared. The staff were kind. If you want wines by the glass, just ask them and they’ll help you choose good pairings- they aren’t listed on the menu. I had zucchini flowers stuffed with a fish/potato concoction and fried which were a different twist on the usual and very good. Also squid ink spaghetti- love those! Again, creative and yummy. Can’t wait to go again- hard to find good food and a pleasant setting in a tourist place like Venice. Recommend reserving which you can do through their website.

This restaurant has great reviews, so we had high expectations. The location is off the beaten path, and we had reservations. The lovely, rustic interior and gracious service were appreciated. Our scallops appetizer was fabulous. My husband ate an uninspired but edible beef entre. But my fish entree with eggplants was horrible. The fish was not fresh, and had been grilled to within an inch of its life. It was inedible, and the eggplants/sauce with it were odd. This was the worst meal we ate on a two-week trip that included Rome, Taormina, and Venice. I would advise avoiding it.

We enjoyed our meal here - found the food delicious and the lady owner Lucia? Was very hospitable and welcoming. Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant too.
Our favourite dishes were the soft and crunchy egg ( very, very good) and the sirloin, which was heavenly!
Would definitely go again anytime we’re in Venice

This remains a very special place in Venice. In the beautiful Cannaregio, they present an amazing variety of food. My favourite pasta with squid ink and the fritto misto were simply outstanding. Returning to Venice after the covid hiatus was scary. I feared everything would be different, but one can always count on the very best Venetian places to hold the fort (despite noticing how one of my favourite places on Strada Nova has changed hands and now sadly serving spritz!). This restaurant is always making sure the experience is near to perfect. Thank you.

The food is on the pricey side for what you get. The terrace is cute because it is next to the canal, but the seats were uncomfortable since you’ll sit on a wooden unstable folding chair. I think there are nicer places in Venice to have dinner.

OsteriaAlCantinon
Dear Rgadv,
As in all restaurants, Osteria Al Cantinon has a menu which is displayed and can be consulted outside the restaurant.
The same menu can be consulted on the web and the prices are indicated with the utmost transparency.
With regard to the size of the tables and chairs outside, you will have noticed that the space available is very limited and it would not be possible, in any way, to arrange larger tables and chairs without blocking the passage.
You could have asked for an indoor arrangement and the comfort would certainly have been greater, sacrificing the characteristic atmosphere you enjoy outside.

After several disappointing experiences around the centre of Venice we finally were lucky to find this hidden gem. The service is very good and caring, the location is beautiful and quiet and the food is the best we had in Venice. Amazing liver with polenta and great pasta. A must.

Great atmosphere and food in this hidden gem. Booking strongly recommended to enjoy great Italian food. We went for tartare, spaghetti cacio pepe, tagliatelle with housemade ragout, polpo and all was delicious. Lovely service.

Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
