After looking a while for a place in Venice we stopped by here and was totally impressed!! Pasta and bread selfmade and so delicious as well as really fresh fish. A wonderful garden in the back. Really to be recommended!!

This is one of those places that you would like to keep to yourself! A fantastic recommendation by Loconda al Leon our fantastic Hotel. A wonderful night in the Castello district away from the crowds in their lovely terrace garden. High quality italian fare extremely reasonably priced and an enthusiastic host. We will be going back on our last night... More

Was recommended this by Nicola at Oceano Mare. The staff are friendly and efficient. The garden out back is lovely too. I felt very welcome travelling solo. I enjoyed a free Spritz on my second visit :-) Spagetti was delicious. After hearing horror stories about how expensive eating in Venice is, I was so lucky to have been recommended this... More

This place was recommended to us by our hotel. It is a quaint spot in the back streets of Venice, but should not be skipped. The food was fantastic (best meal I have had in Italy), and the owner was really accommodating. Would definitely recommend (especially the eggplant ravioli).

This restaurant is on a side street off the southern beach of Venice. The service was good, and the grilled octopus was awesome. But their bathroom looks like it belongs in a gas station.

I don't understand howcome this place got so many good reviews. We went there after reading all those nice comments in trip advisor. I don't know if you can trust trip advisor anymore. The first thing that made me sceptic was no crowd at all! The restaurant was almost empty except 2 couples sitting outside. It was about 9pm. As... More

When the manager at Hotel la Residenza recommended Al Vecio Portal, I was excited to try it, but if I had stumbled on it by myself, I probably wouldn't have given it another look. Humble and tucked away on a side street, it is not a place that draws the eye, but the meal! Oh, the pasta! Wow, the appetizer... More

We did plenty of research on places ro eat in Venice and this restaurant came highly recommended. The food was great and all in all a very enjoyable evening, although we would not rate this as being inexpensive. It was a bit pricier than expected based on other reviews.

We were surprised at the rating. The bruschetta was acceptable. However it took over half an hour for our pasta, although they apologised by providing complimentary fresh bread. The pasta was amateurish. Carbonara had half cooked scrambled eggs and an excess of bacon and the vongole was over salted and bitter. One of the worst meals we have had in... More

I'm one of those folks that doesn't say anything when things are not good. But I have come to trust and depend upon Tripadvisor reviews and to date, this was the only serious let down. I feel some responsibility to alert others. We were staying just a few minutes walk from this restaurant and were very excited to see all... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
