It took five minutes to be given menus then another ten minutes before our drinks order were taken. Other diners were waiting for food to arrive. Apparently a large group were booked in but I always feel it is incumbent on the restaurant to manage other diners' expectations accordingly. Food was OK if nothing memorable. My wife was ill afterwards... More

I don't give many 1 star reviews (in good part to reading other people's great yelp reviews!) but this place deserves it. Food: Have you been to the olive garden? That place is better. We ordered lasagna, which tasted like the frozen stuff from the Super market (but it was made fresh so that is not a good thing), and... More

We stayed in Venice for 3 days and this was the best restaurant out of all. It is not touristy and it is reasonably priced. Service is good. You have to try their spaghetti frutti di mare. I'd go again for sure.

From the outside this restaurant is not really appealing but don't be fooled! inside there is a nice and quite outdoor space where you can sit and enjoy the delicious food they serve. The service is prompt and friendly. The menu' offers good alternatives for vegetarians but has very good fish dishes. I would highly recommend the Caponata, it is... More

We had dinner here one night and opted for their pizza. They were excellent with a nice thin base and tasty topping. The service was good our only disappointment was that we were sat in the street and later discovered that there was a garden which we had not been offered even though the restaurant was quiet.

This is the most delightful restaurant, with helpful staff and delicious food. The mussels were perfect, gnocchi as light as air, steak cooked to perfection and service entirely personal.

Since 2007 we go to "al vecio portal", me and my family, one of the best restaurants we have never frequented. The boss Pino is a really personality: a guy most attentive to all customers of whose he cares as they were his own siblings. Each his dish is a beautifull creation, rich of the italian traditions and the prices... More

Recommended by our hotel, we came for lunch on our first day. We were warmly welcomed and choose to sit in the inner garden area. The thin crust Pizza was so good that we decided to dine in the evening. Great food, wine and service followed and we didn't eat anywhere else during our short say. Highly recommended. On the... We came here on our first night in Venice from a recommendation from our hotel. Our waiter who was originally from the Philippines made us feel at home right way. When the homemade pizzas came out it just blew us away. My 2 sons and my wife came back here for dinner for the 3 nights we stayed here. Excellent... More

I would recommend the Al Vecio Portal. The foods will satisfy your cravings. The ice cream is also great. The waiters are customer oriented and friendly. Thank you Gerald Duyan for introducing the best restaurant in Venice.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
