Positives: Scampi was freshly grilled - yum. Mussels & clams were fresh & tasty. Spaghetti with meatballs were good. Calamari was tasty but greasy. Seabass was good. Bad: grilled veggies were served cold - not sure if that is a local thing. The second scampi dish was served cold though it had been battered and fried. It would have tasted... More

I will have trouble eating pizza in the states after having pizza here. It was just amazing. Perfect crust, just the right amount of cheese and sauce. Also had a bottle of wine (local). Nice ambiance. This place had both indoor and out on the sidewalk tables. Great place for lunch or dinner.

Expect to wait for a table if you arrive after seven pm. This place is popular for a reason. It's terrific! We were told we would get a table in five minutes. We thought it may take ages. It took 5 minutes, to our pleasant surprise! We were even offered a free glass of prosecco while we waited! We both... More

We stopped here for lunch, slightly away from the crowds. It is tucked away in a little corner alongside a narrow canal. You can even experience a gondola ride from here. For lunch I went with the set menu which has 3 options for the first course and 3 or 4 options for the 2nd course. The 2nd course is... More

Extremely busy restaurant, which means having to share a table with others, which was fine. It meant you did not have to wait too long to be seated. I recommend booking though. Food cooked beautifully. Friendly staff.

After our trip on a gandola at night the gandolier advised this restaurant as one of authentic and home style places in Venice. We visited the next day and were amazed by the taste, by the welcoming atmosphere and what was the best - gandoliers and locals were eating there! Go off the beaten routes and order some pasta, prosecco... More

When we were directed to this very nice place wewere told as a recommendation that "gondolieri eat there". In my opinon when the local personnel attend a place for theirfood all the time it must be good. Turned up to be fabulous and the best tortenilli soup I had since my departed grandmother's cooking. The veal venetian style cutlet was great... More

Tucked away under the Ponte San Provolo is this small friendly restaurant, serving traditional Venetian food. It is so small that you must be prepared to queue and share a table at busy times, although you can reserve a table in advance. The waiters are friendly and some are outright funny, playing games and joking (although there is a professional... More

Good traditional Italian food at reasonable prices with a friendly wait staff and in a great location away from the crowds but still close to the action. The lasagna was wonderful - creamy with no tomato in the sauce.

We were worried about this restaurant having read the reviews, but it was very warmly recommended bynour Italian friends. Had to wait almost half an hour crowded at the enterance despite having reserved seats. However once we were seated we found the service professional, cordial and attentive, as opposed to previous comments here. The food indeed was fresh, local and... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
