Bar Verde is just a few blocks from St. Mark's Square in Venice, and a little hard to find, (their canopy says "Al Verde", you have to go inside to see the sign that says "Bar Verde", but well worth the trouble. It is a little more modern than other nearby shops, and the AC was a nice break from... More

Since it was recommended by Rick Steeves, we looked for the place after an exhausting day at San Marco. It is not very far from the square, locatedat a corner in the lanes behind the Basilica. Tired and hungry, we were disappointed with the limited options available but the sandwich and panini were good. The washroom was passable. The next... More

Bar Verde was the first place we ate when we visited Venice in May. The restaurant was crowded for lunch and the displays were very appealing, not to mention it was recommended by Rick Steves, so we thought it would be a good choice. We were rather disappointed. The food and the service were both 'just okay'. Given the chance... More

In the evening from 6 to 8pm, at Venice people drink the "spritz" served with olives and chips, I took it with the Aperol, very good.

Dont come to this bar. I found a mosquito in my beer. They offered me another beer and I said no. When they brought me the check the beer was included. When asked it to be discounted the waiter told me "if you don't pay it I will". A ridiculous answer. The lasagna I ate was kids size by the... More

I have been going to Venice for years. This rates as one of my worst experiences. The waiter did not take any notice of me when I was giving my order for 5 people. He got the drinks order and food order wrong. The food arrived at different times and I had to send the Spaghetti back as it was... More

Avoid! I have been lucky enough to visit Venuce every year of my life as my family come from just outside Venice. Never before have I come across such rude staff and never, in my 28 years of being alive have I eaten such horrible pasta, 5 of us went and not one of us finished our food! There are... More

This cafe was in our neighbourhood, and always quite busy, so we chose here for breakfast 1 morning. We stood at the bar and enjoyed our coffee and pastries, also chatting with the staff and amused at their narratives of certain tourists. I would recommend you do your research before coming to Italy as I found it amusing when some... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
