This restaurant promised so much. Innovative interpretation of Italian classics using market ingredients. I really wanted to say "wow" and be done with it. Except. except... The restaurant is nicely appointed and looks suitably modern for the cuisine. So far, so good The antipasti was stellar and innovative. What delights await! The primi piatti were like the antipasti - more... More

We found this restaurant quite by accident whilst wandering the small streets. The menu looked tantalising, so we returned in the evening having made a reservation. The style is based on Italian, but with a deconstructed twist here and a surprise flavour there. Three courses and a bottle of well chosen wine totalled about €110. Excellent.

While only 287 feet from our hotel our GPS was a bit confused. We are so glad we found this gastronomic delight! From the rabbit terrine to the celery and lime risotto(unique and light and fabulous) to the steak kebob(special for the night) our taste buds were very very happy! Totally recommend this gem down an alley. Only took a... More

That is the brilliant restaurant. I've been there again after two years. There was completely new menu, and every dish became for me like a discovery something new and wonderful! Impressive travel of taste! Caramelized onion and creame from onion and cheese are my ever ever best food impression!

We had a dinner outside, in a small courtyard. Really cool modern menu. English speaking stuff. We had pasta with a swordfish - really good!

Very good food. Not so big in size so you can have all four courses. Fairly priced for the quality. Not touristic at all. Close to tourist attractions but more locals than tourists. Only downside was quite slow service.

In Ai Mercanti a lot of new dishes appear since my previous visit. As usual with the highest quality, new tastes and approach to cuisine. The overall impression is that cuisine and atmosphere become more contemporary, vibrant and excited. And as usual, the best "Americano" cocktail in Northern Italy.

Went for a meal tonight based on the reviews. Service was incredible, suggested wine with each course (not expensive wine) had 3 courses each and shared a cheese. Also both had kir Royal on arrival a bottle of wine, water and dessert wine. Came to €146. Food was incredible and desert (chocolate experience) can not be missed. We are British... More

Description
Ristorante Ai Mercanti in the heart of Venice between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco is an upmarket, romantic restaurant in very cool style that enjoys a high-flying gastronomic reputation. The vaulted dining room is decorated in sophisticated terracotta and black with impressive shining globe lighting. The bar is wittily decorated with dressmakers’ forms and sexy corsets – great conversation starters. The menu is classically-inspired Venetian of a high order, focusing on things from the sea and changing every two months to take advantage of the and array of the freshest ingredients in true Italian style and pastas and desserts are all made in-house. In warm weather the dining room sprawls out onto the adjoining campiello for the loveliest al fresco dining anywhere – the Venetians who crowd Ai Mercanti certainly think so.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
