Set off a small square away from the main traffic. A really nice atmosphere with helpful staff. It was very quiet at lunchtime. There is a simple menu choice but it was very authentic. Beef kebab was especially good.

We found this restaurant during our recent stay in Venice thanks to Trip Advisor. It did take some time to find, as is very much off the beaten track, but did not disappoint. Excellent waiting staff and astonishingly good food beautifully presented. One not to miss.

Heard good things about the restaurant; as first time visitors to Venice we were pleasantly surprised. After searching for the restaurant (it is in a small courtyard off the Calle) we found it very quiet at lunchtime. The waiter said lunchtime was sometimes quiet but busier in the evening. High quality well presented modern cuisine stylishly served. Plenty of fresh... More

Perfect place to get away from the tourist traps. Original, inventive cuisine, delicious wines and great service. Not cheap, but certainly not overpriced by Venice standards. Lovely treat for a nice dinner in a great ambiance.

We had a meal whilst in Venice for our honeymoon. The waiters were friendly and attentive and had some great recommendations for wine to go with our food. My husband and I had three courses. The celery risotto was sublime and certainly something a little different! Strongly advise booking as after 8pm it starts to get very busy. Would highly... More

This was the best restaurant that we experienced in our week in Venice. We read that it would be hard to find so we scouted it out during the day and are glad that we did. We never would have found it, tucked away in a quiet, hidden square, if we were searching in the dark. Tough to find but... More

Although we didn't have a reservation, they accomodated us a table for two in October. The food menu was limited, but it tasted good. They have a large selection of local wines. A bit expensive, but worth it. Mushroom rissotto for 15€ and medium cheese plate for 12€.

Not surprisingly Venice restaurants throw seafood and shellfish in to as many dishes as they can which is great if you are a fan of all things crustacean but not so good if you are allergic to the little mites. So it was a rare and surprising treat to find Ai Mercanti had a more balanced menu with meat (a... More

The restaurant was virtually next door to our hotel and we stumbled across it on our first night in Venice. It remained the highlight of our dining experience in the city. It is off the main tourist trail, but only a few minutes from St Mark's. The staff were very helpful, the menu small, but full of the highest quality,... More

This restaurant was a great experience. We had a 3 course dinner. Everything was delicious. The owner and his staff very competent and freindly. They have a interesting wine card as well. We can highly recomemd The Ai Mercanti. We will for sure try to be back.

Ristorante Ai Mercanti in the heart of Venice between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco is an upmarket, romantic restaurant in very cool style that enjoys a high-flying gastronomic reputation. The vaulted dining room is decorated in sophisticated terracotta and black with impressive shining globe lighting. The bar is wittily decorated with dressmakers’ forms and sexy corsets – great conversation starters. The menu is classically-inspired Venetian of a high order, focusing on things from the sea and changing every two months to take advantage of the and array of the freshest ingredients in true Italian style and pastas and desserts are all made in-house. In warm weather the dining room sprawls out onto the adjoining campiello for the loveliest al fresco dining anywhere – the Venetians who crowd Ai Mercanti certainly think so.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
