We got sandwiches and ate in the bar area, not the restaurant. Good for a cheap and no fuss snack or lunch, if you don't want a full restaurant lunch. V affordable for this area. Good with kids.

We have tried to go to another restaurant but it was fully booked, so we were coming back to hotel and we saw Barbanera, that seemed to be a nice place. We started ordering the house red wine. It was very light and, for my surprise, it was a little too sweet for my taste, what constrasts with the rest... More

My wife and I sat down to a lovely booth next to the window. That was the good part. As for the rest- the spritz drinks (local specialty) tasted odd, the shrimp cocktail smelled odd, and the two pizzas we ordered were soggy. We ordered two white wines that came out room temperature. Our waiter, Raju, then told us that... More

We had a simple late dinner the 1st night in Venice after having gotten lost in the labyrinth of alleys. Thank heavens Pizzeria Birreria Barbanera was open. There were many menu options but we wanted a quick dinner. The caprese insalata did not disappoint and the pizzas were perfectly done. Service was good and attentive. But then again it was... More

A very nice place which feels authentic and is reasonably priced amongst so many places in Venice which just exist to rip tourists off. Good choice of meat, fish and pasta on the menu and it all came to €68.60 for a two course meal for two, including a bottle of wine. When the dishes came they were all really... More

This place was a pleasant finding among all the tourist traps in Venice. Very good food and reasonable prices. The staff was very polite and friendly. This is just behind the Piazza San Marco.

We stumbled across Barbanera by chance one day while looking for somewhere to have dinner, and ended up liking it so much we returned for lunch a couple of days later. Friendly, welcoming atmosphere, pleasant and helpful staff, tasty, unpretentious food at reasonable prices. The pizzas, pastas and fresh grilled fish (accompanied by salad) we had were all delicious and... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
