Pros: Good service - good timing, friendly staff, quick cleanup of a broken water bottle (my bad). Opened wrong wine without me noticing, but exchanged it with no fuss after later objection. Excellent food (spaghetti alle vongole, fritti misti della laguna, tiramisu, etc.). Good atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Cons: Somewhat small tables - I claim ours was even unstable (ergo a... More

Ossobuco duro come una suola di scarpa. Impossibile finirlo. Wit... More

We recently returned from a trip to Europe, which included a third visit to Venice and our third time to lunch at this restaurant. We have enjoyed this restaurant on previous visits to Venice and therefore returned to celebrate my wife's birthday. It has a peaceful setting by the water, away from the busy crowds of Piazza San Marco. The... More

Staying in the excellent La Residenza (see review), sister hotel to La Calcina, we ate at the La Calcina restaurant one evening as the easy option. It is very pleasant, being effectively in the canal, very relaxing whilst watching the boats float by. The food was fine, the service fine and the cost (for Venice) fine. If you read my... More

Approached the restaurant and one family was sitting over two tables at the entrance. The waitress didn't approach us. After 2 min: "sorry?" "No" She checked on the other guests and then "yes?" " can we sit at the terrace?" "No" "Ok can we sit here?" (At the entrance) "For what?" "Coffee" "No" This place will only agree to serve... More

My wife and I stopped in Venice during a recent Mediterranean cruise, and had lunch at Ristorante La Calcina. We stayed in Venice for 2 days before the cruise, so we decided to do some more exploring on this stop and see where we ended up around lunch time. Before the cruise, we had a nice lunch in a restaurant... More

We stopped in for a Saturday Lunch on a recommendation from a friend. It had a really lovely bustling vibe to it, the staff were very attentive and had a lovely view! We went for a specific lobster pasta dish and it was amazing!! Also had the spaghetti Vongole which is a favourite of mine and that was one of... More

In this house, once a private lodging property for English ladies and gentlemen staying in Venice, John Ruskin, the Victorian architectural expert, composed his magisterial study of "Stones of Venice' in the 1860s. 150 years later In January 2016 sitting outside for lunch from this restaurant in the same building had been a pleasure. A few days ago, in October... More

A very lovely restaurant. Superb levels of service. Food was simply amazing and at very reasonable prices compared to other restaurants. We went back a second night. We only found it because we were lost !

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighborhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighborhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighborhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbors exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
