We haven't been to Stresa for 5 years, so a repeat visit to Il Clandestino was at the top of our list. I wandered in one day to make a reservation, to find chef/padrone Franco sitting in the restaurant, chatting with a friend. After indulging my elementary Italian to make the booking, he switched into English and said "you've been... More

Our host recommended this 1* restaurant to us. Never having been to a 1* before we were very dubious and slightly nervous to say the least. Marco our waiter could not have been more helpful or patient with us. He very professionally and friendly guided us through some suggestions of wine and food taking into account our likes and dislikes.... More

On the recommendation of our hotel concierge we gave this a try as we were in the mood for fish. Very glad for the recommendation. From the moment we entered the service was attentive and friendly without being over the top. Franco's food was simple, elegant and delicious. Lovely pasta and a great fish dish. Food allergy was accommodated with... More

6 of us walked in late with no reservations, but they took great care of us. The chef came out to talk about what was available on his menu and we had a great meal!

You won't be disappointed with Il Clandestino...but don't go here if you're looking to save money. It is not crazy-expensive or anything, but if you go in expecting to have a meal on a budget you just won't feel comfortable letting the chef and host "drive" in that way that will give you the best experience here. The chef and... More

We just had dinner at Il Clandestino with my partner and we had a fantastic time : food is fresh, tasty and so amazingly cooked. The waiter was an angel, and very professional. The Chef is very often present in the dinner area which is very pleasant and convivial, he takes time to present his dishes and explain how they're... More

It might be that I was on my own and didn't receive all the goodness the chef seems capable of. It was one of the worst dinners I ever had. Small point is that it is too expensive for what it offers. Small point that the water offered contains too much nitrate (well 13mg/l, there are waters on the market... More

The strangest of dining experiences. The door was closed and the place looked shut on arrival however fortune favours the brave and we ventured in. Took a while to be acknowledged and shown to a table. On a hot muggy night when we requested to be nearer the aircon this was denied even though there were a few tables free.... More

This restaurant is just a little off the dead centre of town but not hard to find. The food is very good. The degustazione menu is a little pretentious but nevertheless the food quality is great.

What has happened with this restaurant? The Patissier has left the restaurant and because of this all of the few offers for a dessert are poor without any ideas and tasteless. To start with, we have ordered prawns (gambas) at a price of 30,00 € per person. For that price we have received 3 pieces of medium size deep frozen... More
