I never have time to write reviews. Caffe degli specchi is a rare exception. I was stunned to find a world-class 'diamond' cafe in such a small, relatively unknown town. Sitting on one of the largest waterfront piazza's in Europe, the elegant, vintage, and appropriately...modernized 'Specchi' was nothing less than perfect, every day of my visit. When it rained, the staff swarmed to adjust the environment (umbrellas, etc.) and when the heat was brutal, the refreshing iced coffee (and Spritz Aperol's) flowed. The challenge of being hygienic and safe, while still pleasurable and culturally significant was met every day by the management too. Sanitized tables, all dishes served on trays, untouched by servers... plenty of spacing, hand sanitizers everywhere, clean, clean, clean. Stellar food, ample heathy space, and run by a chocolatier family second to no one (not even Mr. Wonka) run this establishment well, and the attentive staff are proof. I will return again and again. I love this place!More

Pretends to be high class, but isn’t. Serves unsolicited side dishes to your drinks (snacks), which you have to pay for anyway. The side dishes include meat. We, vegans, asked for a meatless alternative but we didn't get it. Furthermore, the staff was unfriendly. We...pointed out a broken chair to a waiter and got an unfriendly response.More

Trieste, the old harbour of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, providing among other things coffee to all the 'Wiener Kaffeehaus' and manufacturing some of the best coffee till today from local brands like Illy and Hausbrandt, is a wonderful place to go out and drink a coffee,...and there are plenty of beautiful places for that. An elegant coffee house in the old Viennese tradition is the 'Caffé degli Specchi' (of the Mirrors) on the city's main square, the Piazza Unità d'Italia. When the café was opened in 1839 by the Greek Nicolo Priovolo in a palace built by a fellow Greek merchant, the square was called 'Piazza Grande'. There is still grandezza here and one enters the café walking on a red carpet. Outdoor seating under cover is available, but being winter we chose to go inside, sitting on wooden chairs with red upholstery. Only of the once famous mirrors in here not much could be seen anymore (which I didn't mind). Proud for its coffee, the city has different expressions for the one's offered in other parts of Italy. Thus we had a 'Capo in B', a 'Nero in B' and a 'Cappuccino Triestino'. Since I felt like a sweet as well I asked for a 'Strudel', which apparently they had run out of, so the very friendly waiter recommended a 'Putizza', which was a bit of a dry, but tasty nut roll with origins as a festive dessert in Slovenia, where it is called 'Potica'. Having gone through different hands in its history, the coffeehouse now belongs since 2012 to Cioccolateria Peratoner from Pordenone, a town a bit further north.More

Well we had a sprtitz degli specchi but it was more a juice than a real spritz moreover they had a big lion of San Marco in front of the coffee machine that is not properly from trieste according to history. This sprtitz is like...to call tofu hamburger a real one. Very disappointedMore
