Accidentally came across this delightful little open air cafe just across the Tiber Island at just the right time; we were hot and thirsty from a long walk across town and here was this unexpected little oasis offering all kinds of shaved ice drinks and...fresh sandwiches. The "Lemoncocco" shaved ice drink was so delicious, we came back the next day for more. Not only did they use fresh flavors and ingredients, they chopped up some tasty raw coconut to top off the drink! We also enjoyed their excellent selection of sandwiches, which they were kind enough to heat for us. Not much seating (2 chairs), but the staff are very friendly, the cafe is very clean, and the prices very fair.More

Lovely refreshing fruit and drinks. Lovely sandwiches, the coffee is strong (but not too strong) and very reasonably priced!

We visited this shaved ice stand numerous times during our stay in Rome. It was a perfect break during the hot July days. It is a little expensive for a snow cone, but well worth it. The ice is shaved by hand! And they offer...lots of fresh fruit as options to add to the treat.More

We stopped here on a torrid hot day. It is a stop on the food Detour. The freshly scraped shaved ice with syrup and fruit (4 euro) was great for cooling down. We also enjoyed an equally refreshing coffee granita. Apparently this place has been...here for almost a century!!More

Probably the problem was that I went to Rome after some weeks in Sicily, where I had the opportunity to taste the best granitas of my life, but this grattachecca did not generate any enthusiasm in me. For sure it's nice to try once a...roman tradition of this hand-scratched block of ice, and the atmosphere along Tevere river helps, but I found it an expensive piece of ice filled with industrial syrup... Pls do not call it granita!More

Got lucky with no line. Heard on the Rick Steves walking tour for Trastavere that this little kiosk was the most famous. The shaved ice was quite refreshing in this heat!

The line is impossible, but do wait. A Roman tradition since the dawn of time. Much much more than a snowcone... try the mixed berries and don't forget the coconut pieces!

For tourists, try this once (see earlier review). Romans adore this place. For some of us, we are hoping for more innovation. On my last order I did not get the fresh lemon juice that they used in the past, although this has been their...practice. That means that my whole order was dyed syrups from a bottle; one of us could not finish because of swollen tongue. So it's Ok to try--but at some point it does get tiresome and I wonder when a more innovative grattachecca will emerge that uses homemade syrups or juices. (I have seen other ones closer to Trastevere with the little silver pitcher that contains real lemon juice, look for that?) Tip: 2E for shaved ice only (extra real fruit is 2E more, so clarify when ordering to not get the upsell)More

It basically shaved ice with added flavored syrups. At first you think it will be tasteless but it is very refreshing after a day walking around Rome.

Rome is usually so hot in the summer. A sweet or tangy grattachecca is just the thing to cool you down. I heard about this kiosk on Rick Steve's Trastevere audio guide and it was a pleasant break from the sun to have pineapple &...orange iced drinks. The kiosk is at the Trastevere end of Pons Cestius, the bridge that connects Isola Tiberina to the main land. I don't remember there being any seating, but leaning on the side rails, the view of the river below is a great sight to enjoy.More

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded
postcard, a little worn around the edges but still
charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering
streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and
overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible
mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of
entertainment - a rotating set of street performers
entertains almost every night, and unforgettable
