Great dinner. Owner/ host was a total gentleman, food was both well done and presented, hostess had great food and wine recommendations. Off the beaten path, locals place and not a tourist place (at least when we went, caveat during Covid...)

Placed on the itinerary of travelers visiting The Eternal City by both Eater and “A Pasta Lover’s Guide to Rome,” Trattoria Da Cesare al Casaletto resides in an apartment block distant from the rest of Rome’s great eateries, this and the “by phone only” reservations...policy assuring mostly locals lining up for traditional fare in a large but stark dining room.
Known simply as “Da Cesare” to many, and closed Wednesday but otherwise open from 12h45 to 15h00 for lunch plus 19h45 pm to 23h00 pm for dinner, it is primarily by bus or Uber that guests make way to Rome’s Monteverde Nuovo neighborhood, this particular evening finding nearly every indoor seat packed as temperatures were too cold for the patio.
Lacking central Rome’s cobblestone, wider streets and a sizable park giving the surrounding are a distinctly more residential feel, it is once seated that servers present with convivial charm, English-fluency limited but made less necessary by translated menus.
Dubbed by one local writer as “the perfect Trattoria” back in 2012, a bare-bones building with bright lights placing diners’ focus on Food and conversation, it is from Fritti, Pizza, Primi and Secondi that guests may choose to build their meal, affordable Wines also highlighted such as €4 for a particularly generous pour of Prosecco.
Built on classics, but ranging widely enough to please most palates, one will quickly notice most tables enjoying good Bread while debating options, the Gnocchi Fritti frequently following with fried Dumplings swimming in a pool of what amounts to Cacio e Pepe Fondue.
Refined without feeling “stuffy,” the servers seemingly everywhere at once despite lengthy expediting times, Pizza comes on a crisp but forgettable Crust while Pastas allow diners to select their own Noodle and Sauce combination, such as thin Ribbons of Fettuccine slicked with Egg Yolk and Pork Jowl in the case of good Carbonara.
Leaving the Egg out of square-cut Tonnarelli, a dry Noodle cooked al dente, flavors leaned a bit too salty in Da Cesare’s alla Gricia while Hunter’s style Veal got lost amongst Olives and Garlic, thus raising Coda alla Vaccinara's stock as the better Secondi.More
The food is good here, served in the "small plate" and "large plate" sizes that was very fashionable a few years ago but thankfully now going out of style. Wine is served in glasses, carafes and bottles, which I appreciate and the sommelier is helpful...if (like me) you aren't familiar with Italian wines. Tables are small and it's very loud. Not really close to centre, but get a cab or drive there yourself, if you want to enjoy a true cucina romana, which can be tricky and heavy, if you find yourself in a wrong place... Not here. From different starters of fried baccala, fiori...di zuccha... my favourite fried polpettine di bollito (mixed boiled/soup meat)... the best roman tripe I have ever eaten - absolutely superb. I showed up for Sunday lunch without a reservation I knew I was in trouble once I walked in. I was politely told no tables available, if could come back that evening or another day, I made a reservation for Sunday dinner. I started off...with eggplant meatballs (3) as appetizer very good. This was followed by bucatini amatriciana which was delicious. This was followed by lamb cacciatore in white wine sauce with olives excellent. Let’s not talk about the millefoglie dessert. The vino and grappa was the icing on the cake.
Definitely worth the tram or cab ride. My new favorite restaurant in Roma. The staff was professional and courteous.More
Rome with so many wonderful restaurants but we had only 5 nights of dinners for my husband and I to choose. We were told about Trattoria da Cesare by an American couple we met at breakfast in our hotel. They said it was a gem...for authentic Roman cuisine and for fresh made pasta dishes. We made an early reservation for 5:30PM and took Tram 8 from Piazza Venezia to the end of the line in the neighborhood of Gianicolense and then walked about 150 feet to the restaurant which is somewhat hidden back behind some shrubbery with one small sign on a residential street. We were greeted and seated and of course, no one else was there at that hour becaue Italians dine much later. We ordered the bruschetta and the stuffed meatballs for appetizers. I ordered the House Special Pasta with vegetables and a creamy delicious sauce recommended by the waitress but my husband ordered something different - a Veal Hunter's Stew and french fries. I don't know why he didn't take the recommendation of the couple we met - they said order PASTA because it is superb here. My meal was wonderful. My husband didn't care for his dish and hardly ate anything on his plate. One should always order the house specialty is my motto. I also took the waitresses' recommendation for a wine and it was perfect. Good thing we came in early. By 7PM there was not a seat left in the place as it was crowded with locals. Service got a lot slower with a full restaurant. A birthday party of at least 20 people was also seated. Good place to dine off the beaten tourist path in Rome and you will not pay an "arm and a leg" for dinner at this fine restaurant.More
We had the good fortune of dining in this wonderful restaurant with friends who live in Rome. They made reservations for our arrival or we would never have gotten in! Every dish was extraordinary. Just really good pasta with perfect seasonings. Desserts were delicious and...topped off with limoncello. Just perfect!More
A famous local Roman restaurant about 20 minutes away from the city centre. It is recommended that you try to make a booking in advance as it does get busy, we went on a Tuesday night and it was 80% full.
Upon arrival we were...well greeted and to our relief they had an English menu. We ordered 3 starters the fried calamari, fried eggplant croquette and fried meatballs. I personally preferred the fried eggplant croquette crispy on the outside with a soft mash-like texture in the centre and served with a dollop of flavoursome tomato sauce. The meatballs and calamari weren't that special but the taste were good. For mains we were told by our driver to order the pasta as half-portions so we sampled 3 different pastas. We had the spaghetti carbonara, cacio e pepe and alla matriciana with tubi pasta.
I personally enjoyed the carbonara over the cacio e pepe as the egg offered a little bit more of a creamy taste whilst for those who wants more 'umami' different the alla matriciana would be the crowd favourite.
We were too full for dessert so can't offer any opinions, however the locals recommended their tiramisu.
The bill came to 88 euros including a bottle of wine which was quite reasonable considering the half portion pasta only costs 7 euro each. I wouldn't make a deliberate trip out to this restaurant as I believe in the city centre you are bound to find something similar and without a signature dish I just don't see the need to make an exclusive trip.More
We walk up to the restaurant and we are told they are fully booked for the day, night, the day after and so on. We even ask to make a reservation for another day and are turned away. 4 blonde women walk in right after...us without reservation and are seated immediately. This place is a disgrace.More
