We were looking for another restaurant when a local point at this place and said "bono" and we decided to give it a try. The place has some old world charm, as we were seated we noticed that some tables were reserved, mosthy a fixed clientele from the area as we were at the time the only tourists there. The... More

We ate La Matriciana two weeks ago. The restaurant was close to our hotel and when we checked it out to make a reservation I felt it had the atmosphere of a typical trattoria. The atmosphere and the waiters were the highlight of our visit. Where La Matriciana fell short was the food. The quality was fine, but the dishes... More

Terrific authentic Italian food, very old world charm. Gets really busy and packed with locals-- good sign. Their bread selection is to die for--2€/person. Excellent service and a bit pricey compared to the other restaurants in the vicinity but very worth it. Just go ---

Excellent service and food, found this place on Internet . Walked in early around 6.30pm and were seated immediately . Very popular spot later on in evening, so may need to book or wait for table. Established 1870 as a trattoria. If budget conscious may be a little pricey, but was not over the top. Overall a fantastic place opposite... More

Stopped here on our first night in Rome. Service was good as was the food. Well worth a visit. If you sit outside you can get pestered by street sellers but that's par for the course. Nice classy restaurant.

Ended up at this restaurant only because it was next door to the B & B where we stayed. Turned out to be the best food and service we had during the nine day vacation. The first visit was good enough we chose to go back. Both times the food and service were outstanding. The grilled lamb and scallops could... More

Away from the main street, the focus on tourists seems to drop off, and the real Roman restaurants seem to appear. This is one of them. The restaurant was busy, but we still managed to get a table for two. Service was excellent. The food was very good, focusing on the real Italian menu, with starters, followed by pasta and... More

We visited Rome for the first time recently and stayed at Hotel Columbia—just across the street from La Matriciana. We ate dinner there our first evening and found out why Rome is famous for its cuisine. I couldn’t resist the Fettuccino con tartufo aero (pasta with black truffles) and the waiter agreed. We were both right and I may never... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighborhood Profile
Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
