This restaurant comes with excellent reviews but we would have said that it was average but no better than that. The staff were very helpful and the menu is of standard roman fare; we had veal and chicken, both of which were well cooked but in no way special. As in another local restaurant, despite and ext naive wine menu,... More

This old Italian restaurant faces the Opera Theatre and thus is popular with Italian opera buffs. It dates from 1870 and features a patio from which you can people-watch, or there are a few rooms inside. The waiters are formally dressed but there is nothing stuffy about them. They are friendly and helpful and all speak passable English. It is... More

I'm surprised by all the positive reviews, in our opinion this restaurant was just OK. I ordered the grilled fillet for my second course – it was an average fillet and came with no sides. I ordered a side of asparagus and it was overcooked and mushy. We had the mussel appetizer and pasta first courses and again there was... More

We returned to this restaurant an cannot find any faults. On Tuesday evening we lost count on people being turned away because they did not book in advance. On thursday's visit we were offered a complimentary glass of limoncello. It is the best for Roman rustic eating experience!

This restaurant was recommended to us by our Hotel. Directly opposite the opera theatre it was an easy walk. Despite not reserving a table beforehand the staff managed to get us seated within 5 minutes of arriving and we saw them turn other couples away. The food was great but you need to be careful when ordering and check the... More

Dined here for lunch mid week. Had the ravioli. Was fantastic. Great service, great atmosphere. Very reasonably priced. Will eat here again.

This restaurant was close to a hotel where my friends' were staying. Thus, the conceirge advised them to go to La Matriciana. Personally, I was disappointed with my main dish (pasta with truffle). It was tasteless. However, my friends enjoyed both of their dishes (shrimp scampi risotto and their signature dish La Matriciana pasta). Furthermore, we ordered a few starters... More

Suggested by our BNB Host, Located across from the Opera House, close to Termini, tables covered in white linens, Wait Staff dressed up and very helpful, and many speak good English. They provide each table with a bowl of olives and a bread assortment that is fantastic. I tried the pasta with ground lamb, cooked perfect. My wife ordered seafood... More

Our first night in Rome, recommended by our B&B and not too far to walk. Everything we ordered was very good but we ordered far too much. We started with Penne all'arrabbiata (penne pasta with spicy tomato sauce), Ravioli di ricotta e spinaci con slasaal pomodoro (ravioli with ricotta and spinach, tomatoes and basil), Saltimbocca alla romana (veal with ham... Our hotel is on the same block and after checking trip advisor we decided to give it a try for dinner. The place was full and we have to sit outside which is a bit chilly. The food was good and so is the service. I have the pork chop which is really tasty. Not a bad place to have... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighborhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
