Stopped in for a bite on a walk by. The zucchini flower appy was ok - not fab a bit too much batter for our liking. The pastas however were great. Local dishes that really gave you the sense you were eating a unique dish highlighting the region. The service was kind and attentive.

I was visiting southern Italy with my husband, sister and brother and we stayed in Matera. We chose Il Cantuccio because both the guidebook we were using and our hotel recommended it. As other reviews have mentioned, it was a small, intimate space and the tables all filled as the evening progressed. We loved talking to one of the owners,... More

This was one of my favorite dinner experiences. This is a small, intimate restaurant where you are likely to be served by one of the owner-chefs, as we were. He will likely suggest things that are not necessarily on the menu. The owner was charming and attentive, and we decided to just let him choose something for us. We had... More

Il Cantuccio is a charming and lively authentic Italian restaurant with incredible food and phenomenal service. The restaurant is run exclusively by the owner and the chef. As you can imagine, this requires a great deal of multi-tasking. The owner serves as the waiter, bartender, hostess and buses the tables. I say all this to say do not go here... More

After spending the last three nights eating wonderful meals for 40 euros or less, we stopped in here. Mistake. The cook is using every shortcut to make cheap dishes. Iceburg lettuce - in Italy. I had a soup and had salami cut in at the end as 'sausage' in my bean soup. Avoid this place. It was the most expensive... More

Very excited to grab the last table one October lunchtime and enjoyed our first course very much. It must have taken well over an hour for our mains to arrive which included a trip to the shops from the chef I imagine to retrieve some ingredient that he had run out of. Everyone else had long gone. The main courses... More

So we traveled here in June of 2015 and we have to say, it was the absolute best food on our Southern Italy trip. It was a great value, hospitable owner and chef, and great little ambiance. It's not a fast food, order whatever you want kind of place. It's true to style of an Italian experience where the staff... More

We went here on our last night because it looked very local. The staff was very sweet and welcoming and even thought it was packed with locals on a Saturday night, the service was very attentive. The Aglianico de Vulture wine was great with our pasta dishes. I had a thick homemade spaghetti like noodle with paprika and pured chickpeas... More

Matera is a place Picasso and Braque would have built if they had been architects. The hotels, homes, churches, piazzas and restaurants piled on top of each other and linked by winding narrow ancient stone paths in a wild vertical cubist design of greys and brown earth tones (at least in mid-winter). Along with the visual pleasures there are also... More

The food was great, and the service was personal. One of the owners served us in person, and was a pleasure to chat with.
