Chiky was a welcome find after a long day. We sat outside but if I were to go back I would opt to sit inside. It is a big restaurant that had a nice atmosphere...live piano player Friday and Saturday nights. They make an amazing gin cocktail at your table and their goat cheese topped with caramelized onions on the... More

We had a terrible experience here last night. The only positive is that the meals are freshly made because we had to wait for our paella as it had been given to another table. The bread was inedible and at least a day old. The waiter tripped on my chair at one point and did not react at all. I'm... More

Thank goodness we hadn't read prior reviews before coming here! We sat outside around the corner (c/ Coloreros 3, but the same restaurant as at c/ Mayor 4) and had excellent grilled vegatables and seafood paella, prepared fresh after we had ordered it (i.e., it was not sitting around waiting for a customer), along with a very good 1/2-bottle of... years ago (many years ago) this was a good restaurant and i had good meat there. things have changed, and now became a tourist trap in central madrid. prices are not cheap for what they serve you, one person can easily go over 40 euros without wine. the roasted lamb was very poor; same was the baked sea bream. the... The worst service and rudest staff I have ever seen in Madrid. In addition, the food is overpriced. Very bad cost-quality ratio; it is the typical expensive restaurant for unaware tourists. I would not recommend this place at all.

Freshly made curios when you order, the same with the pancakes. Great atmosphere. However on Sundays and public holidays the service is much slower and they charge more!

I've spent 3days in Madrid with a friend and while we were looking for a place to eat Paella we saw this restaurant. Outside there was a young man who tried to talk to us (we don't speak Spanish) after 5minutes we were sitting inside eating tastie food in a very warm and cosy place! The day after...we where there... More

This restaurant is located on the Calle Mayor opposite the Plaza Mayor, couldn't be better placed, their speciality is lamb. A leg of lamb + salad + potatoes = 15 Euros...unbeatable. Staff were friendly and tolerant towards non Spanish speakers, also a good selection of wines including the best Ribero Del Duerro. You'd be hard pressed to find such a... More

Fiona and I found this great restaurant just off the Calle Mayor in Madrid, the house red was as good as any red we drank whilst there. the Paella was served straight from the pan the meal was cooked to perfection and from raw ingrediants which is not common. but was perfect. well recommended.

The food was good, no doubt: I tried the sole, while my husband had the foie gras beef fillet. The price of the dishes were really quite over the top in terms of the portion size and the quality. The restaurant has a friendly feel, not very posh, so its hard to justify their prices. The mains and a bottle... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
