We had the opportunity to come to Los Galayos for dinner and it was amazing. The owner specifically took care of us and made our meal so delicious. We got the GJ and tonics which they make right in front of you with dry ice!! It was the best gin and tonics we have ever had. So fresh and so... More

We chose this restaurant as we had seen online that it had excellent suckling pig. My fiancé and I both chose the suckling pig. When our dish arrived I received the ribs and my fiancé received the leg. Both are very contrasting types of meat as the leg is lovely and full of meat, however, the ribs are pure fat... More

This restaurant was recommended by Guest Services person in our nearby hotel. He specifically said (as we are not familiar with authentic Spanish food), we should order "Los Galayos TRADITION! Beef Tenderloin Self Prepared at your Table on a Sizzling Block Stone for Grill.... 23,95 €pp." (description cut & pasted from their on-line menu) He said its a fine cut... More

The best looking restaurant on the Plaza Mayor, so I hope it will be the best culinary experience in Madrid. So I was disappointed. The picture was great from the paella, but it was average. It wasn't cooked only boiled. So It was expensive almost 50 euro with 2 people. 2 streets below in a small restaurant was much much... More

They charged us 6 euros for a bread that should be free as it is in every other restaurant in plaza mayor. We ordered paella valenciana for two and it was the smallest around and a little bit salty even for paella. A local friend told us that most restaurants offer a free shot of digestive liquor after meal. This... More

Its a cliche to lunch on the Plaza Mayor, right? All overpriced tourist menu's, right? Not at all. In the corner and with another terrace on a side alley this restaurant has high quality traditional Spanish food. Its full of Spaniards and some like us lucky tourists.

We had a great lunch. Good sangria too. After walking all morning it was fantastic to sit down and take our time, eat and watch the world go by. After a bit of shopping, we came back for a few beers.

We attended a friend's birthday at Los Galayos in the part of restaurant outside Plaza Mayor. Due to the group size we were given a private room on the top floor which doesn't have the same charm as the interiors of the lower floors however the private balcony was pleasant. White and red wines that were served were very good,... More

The hotel concierge recommended this place for a traditional paella. It's in the Major plaza. The aperitif is great...olives that's not too sour and the potato with crispy pork n sausage is a winner! For starters, we had the croquet (€9.80) that's crisp on the outside and gooey soft n savory on the inside. The other starters, a traditional dish... More

Although advertising says open until 12 I arrived at 11pm and was placed in a table looking at the bins even though there were 7 other tables available. The waiter was efficient yet no warmth obviously wanting to leave. First course was gambas pil pil. Ingredientes perfect yet gambas overlooked and garlic burnt. Second course lamb chops and, not on... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
