This is a really good place to come for an afternoon drink and snack. Traditional décor. inexpensive, good service and generous free tapas. Popular with locals which is always a good sign

This cerveceria was two blocks from our apartment on Calle Mayor. We dropped in by chance on our first day, and have gone back each afternoon after Museum or park exploring. Fine gentlemen behind the bar; excellent tapas with beer; and a 'neighbourhood' ambience where regulars drop in. An oasis on Calle Mayor.

This large bar, restaurant and meeting place is on the Calle Mayor a few yards away from the busy Puerta del Sol or Plaza Mayor. I stayed nearby and went in there most evenings during my 5 day stay. Laureano, Manolo and their other colleagues listened to my "not so good" Spanish and looked after me accordingly with various, beers,... More

Love this place.Great service, excellent tapas and good prices Very typical Spanish tapas bar and restaurant a hit with locals and tourists. The waiters are so lovely and remembered us when we returned 18 months later on our recent stay in madrid

Based on the reviews we decided that this was a must do. The food was kind of ok, the passionate waiter was more than ok but overall we expected more. The price is accordingly so at the end nothing to complain. Not a place to go to next time when we are in Madrid

Me and my boyfriend were looking for something good and cheap. We found this place with an amazing day menu: 3 courses, bread and wine for 10 euro each! It was such a delicious experience. We ate lentils with sausage, milanesa steak with fried potatoes and to finish, a delicious apple dessert. This place is nice because you can enjoy... More

A real taste of Madrid. Three super friendly staff who look after you. Its a best kept secret in the centre of the city.Tapas with your beer is excellent and not bland like the gig chain tapas places. Your own local bar in the centre of madrid

This place is a jump in the past. Crossing the door you go back of 30 years. We had there both breakfast and dinner. Let's start from breakfast: they make a good espresso and pastries are OK. The dinner: tapas and beer, beer and tapas. Tapas are really really good. The atmosphere is incredible: relax, joy, pleasure of stay with... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
