Dropped in for a vermouth on Saturday afternoon. It seemed to us the most traditional find in a semi-touristy area. And we were right. There is a long bar upfront to sit or stand at, as well as several tall round tables. There is also a proper restaurant area in back. We just had a quick vermouth (a local one... More

Not the most obvious place to drink, but a great little find, slightly off of the main tourist streets. Quiet inside, with rustic, traditional decoration, it was a welcome break from all of the hubbub outside. small tapas were normally served with each drink, an the staff were friendly, and glad to welcome us back each tome we went in.... During our stay in Madrid, we took a tapas tour with Adventurous Appetites, a local tapas food tour, and they did not steer us wrong. Our first stop was the Taverna de los Ángeles, where we devoured setas (mushrooms) in white wine and butter, chorizo (sausage) with potatoes and other amazing tapas, along with a festive introduction to La Larada... We were looking for a place recommended in the DK guide. Unfortunately it was closed that day (not indicated in the guide) so we looked around a bit. Our technique of deciding where to eat has 4 steps: (1) General appearance of the place (2) Presence of locals (3) Menu choices and (4) prices. It is a good guideline which... More

Really liked this place - authentic bar with good tapas (blue cheese pate is gorgeous) and they serve real cider which was a welcome change from beer and wine. We had great service - found the barman to be friendly and welcoming. Used by locals so always a good sign.

We arrived here wanting to have a drink and something to eat. We got our beers and than the barman went outside to make a call. Ten minutes passed and new customers arrived. The barman just ignored them and went on with his telephone call. We were ready for some food, but he didn't notice. When he finally finished his... More

We stumbled across this place while walking back to the hotel and finally! good food after a disappointing run in Seville! They had a football game on, full with locals, great food, decent prices and the funniest waiter who made us feel welcomed like we are locals.

We came across this bar restaurant by chance and called in for a drink. The waiter made us very welcome and we ended up staying a lot longer than originally anticipated. We also returned the next day for lunch and the restaurant was very busy with mainly locals. Always a good sign! The food was fairly average, but the portions... More

Booked for 8:30 but arrived an hour early so had a couple of drinks at the bar. Barman was extremely friendly to start with and improved as the evening went on!! We were invited to a table at 8:00. Food was amazing and a very decent house Rioja helped it down. Champions league footie on the TV in the bar.... More

All your favourite tapas at €4 a pop set in a side street near Gran Via. Every dish is well cooked and arrives promptly, great ambience with lots of old photos and objet d'arte - old bits of kit really - there was Don Quixote's shield over the bar an original piece from the 17C.

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
