We stayed at the Mercure Madrid Santa Domingo where the hotel was good but breakfast not so much. This place was nearby; great coffee and excellent value for money. Staff friendly and service prompt.

Extremely quick service - tried breakfast twice before going to the office. Opens at 7am. Fair prices and efficient, not the sort of place of an experience of ambience. Busy place, but one of the few that open early in the area.

Spain has just won the European soccer championship and it's time for a drink! And a gentleman invites us into Oscar's terrace bar; ParisTokyo... Cut to the chase... Over an hour to get drinks which were wrong, wrong, missing and wrong! The only thing that did not disappoint us was the bill... Because we knew it would also be wrong...... More

Just a few words about that restaurant. It's cheap, its close to the Opera and King's Palace, its a very good place to eat something in the middle of a day. And three type of the price: if you eat on the bar, table or on the open-air. We took the second option with a table on the second floor... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
