Our family of five ended up eating at Trattoria Malatesta two of the three nights we were in Madrid. We all loved everything we tried which included the baked provolone, Margherita pizza, pasta bolognese, chicken saltimbocca, and pasta carbonara ( really amazing!!). The second night we even went for a second course dinner after paella elsewhere because we loved it... More

Excellent Italian restaurant. Were lucky to get a table (outside) at 8:30, and it had opened at 8:00. Excellent pasta dishes. So enjoyed it we booked an table for the following night inside. Was a little worried when we were taken down into the basement, how ever the atmosphere was buzzing. Great night

Happen to find this lovely restaurant on the last day of our stay in Madrid! The best! Typical! Always the last day when you find the best eats when your on holiday! Highly recommend the tagliatelle vongole!! And the pizzas! They even give a free lemoncello shot before you pay for the bill! The service is amazing!

Just of Calle Arenal as you go toward la Puerta del Sol, there is a little pizzeria that will satisfy you completely. It also serves other Italian classics at prices that are unbeatable. We had a all dressed pizza, a spaghetti bolognese and a good bottle of Chianti for hardly 70 Euros. The service is up to standard and the... More

The best Italian in memory in either the US or Spain. Delightful, interesting location on one of those ubiquitous tiny streets in the heart of Old Madrid. We had a cheese pizza, tagliatelle pasta with bolognese sauce and dessert of tiramisu and Panna cotta alla vaniglia con frutti di bosco all washed down with sangria and a complementary cordial that... Lovely restaurant, helpful staff. Excellent food. Pizzas a bit on the large side but very tasty. The ricotta cheese and spinach starter and the tiramisu excellent.

The food here was sensational - probably the closest to authentic Italian you will find in Madrid. Our server had a very negative attitude but I think we were just unlucky in who we got since the rest of the staff seemed friendly and fun.

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
