My wife and I dined at the sister restaurant, Taberna el Sur the night before and really enjoyed the food and service.and thought we would try some different items on the menu at El Sur de Huertas. We were not disappointed. The Mediterranean salad which we shared was fresh and crisp. We had a lovely and well priced bottle of Vina Galana Spanish red wine which perfectly accompanied our main courses of pork cheeks and salmon croquets which were delicious. Service was quick in a friendly atmosphere.

I called in for lunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon and enjoyed a lovely long lunch. The menu was extensive, very reasonably priced and the service was discreet but attentive. I recommend the salmorejo soup and the tortilla - which was perhaps the tastiest I had in Madrid. I'll definitely return when I'm back in Madrid.

A very cozy and small space, but with enormous potential, wonderful food and 5-star service. It was with incredible energy and a sympathy to make many people envious that my girlfriend and I were received in this small space. Although it was full, we spoke to the waiter and he quickly gave us feedback on how long we would have to wait to have a table (luckily we didin’t have to wait long). As always, we try every time we go to this type of restaurant, ask for a bit of various things in order to have chance to try more than one dish on the menu. I say for sure that I can’t choose a favourite dish, everything was great, very well prepared and the quantities were more than sufficient. We left the restaurant full, in the stomach and in the soul, for the warm welcome we had. I strongly recommend it.

Best dinner I had in Madrid by far. As a solo diner I had a good welcome and was quick to be seated. When I slightly over ordered (I am used to tiny London portions) the waiter said that was going to be too much, and I should order less. I loved this honesty! He was right. I had the Prawns with garlic and the goats cheese and walnut salad. It was plenty. And came with bread. Also the glass of wine that the waiter suggested was delicious and SO Inexpensive . The same in London would have cost triple the amount. Yes it’s crowded and yes it’s noisy on a Saturday night, but it’s really good place and it very much lives up to the hype .

The waiter was super nice, could speak English very well and always made sure we got everything right. We didn't have to wait much for our meals which looked and tasted amazing. It was the best meal and hospitality we had in Madrid during our trip. The waiter even surprised us with sweet liquor shots at the end. I'd totally recommend it for anyone who spend some time in Madrid.

Stopped here last night for dinner and we were not disappointed. After being seated our server Peter explained the menu to us and suggested a few dishes to try. We were pleased with our choices and had a delicious dinner. Dont pass this place up. Again, thanks Peter for your hospitality.

We went to sur de las huertas on a busy Saturday night and waited 20 minutes for a table but Johnny was very attentive and kept us informed even while we were waiting outside. The food was excellent and the service even better, with Johnny again checking in frequently with friendly service. All the food was delicious, and the fried eggplant appetizer in particular drew rave reviews from our group. Highly recommend and would definitely go back!

Absolutely amazing. We visited on a Thursday evening and we were served by Peter and Andres, who were super friendly and swift. The jamon iberico plate is ok, so is the ropa vieja, but the prawn risotto and the sangria(made by Andres) take the cake, they are truly amazing. Overall a very nice place to spend an evening after visiting the Thyssen museum.

We visited El Sur de Huertas when we were in Madrid two years ago and loved the food so much that we went back again. The service was prompt and very friendly. Our waiter, John, spoke perfect English and was kind and patient enough to help us with our Spanish. Our meals - the ravioli and the salmon/avocado tartare were fresh and tasty with beautiful presentations. Geraldine, the chef, even came out to ask how our dinners were. Everyone working at El Sur de Huertas made us feel welcomed and at home. And they provided an exquisite dining experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough!

The paella and risotto were AMAZING!! The waitress, Jennifer, was so kind and was really helpful with making sure my meal was gluten free. This was one of mine and my boyfriend’s favorite meals while in Madrid. Highly recommend to anyone exploring Madrid!

I went to Madrid on solo trip. This was one of the highest reviewed places, prompting my interest. From the start of seeing the menu, it was already starting off well with very affordable meals and ability to choose half portion sizes which was helpful for me to try many different types of food as a person dining by myself. The food then lived up to the hype: my favorites were the empanadas and risotto w/ mushrooms and fried ham, and I did have other food that was great as well but going to sound less gluttonous for now =). Then the drink I ordered was a pisco sour: I’ve had this drink mainly in Chile > 10 years ago and I’ve tried many places to try and re-live that great taste. El sur was the first place to have re-created that taste for me! Overall high recommendations and give thanks to my server Giselle and bartender Rebecca!

Giselle attended to us very well. We really enjoyed the huevos rotos con boletus, and the calamari with aioli sauce was delicious as well. The restaurant was able accommodate our family of 5 including a baby stroller only having reserved a table by phone about an hour prior. I would recommend and repeat as well.

This bar was such a great find! We were looking for a quiet terrace, but they were closing down so we end up in El Sur, sitting in the (very cute) bay window, and we had drinks and food inside while feeling that we were outside. Although the sangria, risotto and cheesecake were truly remarkable, what I enjoyed the most was the treatment we got from the waiter, John. I'm definitely coming back.

We enjoyed our lunch in this cozy, friendly restaurant. We shared a number of half rationed, including shrimp in oil with garlic, grilled vegetables, and other dishes that worked well for non meat eaters. The praise that fills current reviews is well earned.

Best food experience in Madrid! We went there for lunch and tríed different tapas suggested by Peter that has been excellent in the suggestions. We tasted chipirones, the salmon tartar, the huevos rotos and the mussaka. The quality of the ingredients was so high and the service offered more. Peter was so kind to ask us how it was going after each dish and he offered us some chupitos:) Very recommended! It was the third time I was in Madrid and this was the best experience ever.

Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
