Unfortunately i have to leave a rating which is not good as most of the others.
We made reservation for the restaurant due to the fact that the front part of the bar is reserved for Pintxos (very cosy and traditional though) and we wanted full dinner and a bit more quiet place.
When we came to the table there were already two little breads on the table which we considered as included service. The service itself was quite rough. For the prices the quality of the food is decent but the quantity left us both hungry (which is a bit pity for 26 Euro p.p.).
When it came to the bill i noticed that both breads were billed seperately as well as the small salad (9 Euro) which we considered as part of the dinner. During the paying process the waitress was obviously disappointed that we gave a little less than 10 % tip and even asked if i am serious, which also left a bad overtone.

We visited La Cepa after hearing about the quality of jamón, and after spending a few days tasting different plates around Donostia. The jamón we got in La Cepa was not only great value, but also by a long shot the most delicious and flavoursome we had. It was simply amazing. To add to that the staff were fantastic and very friendly. A place that you have to visit for a place of jamón if in town.

We were already in this wonderful old town bar of Donostia-San Sebastian for the first time in 1980 ... and in the following years again and again when we stayed in this (for us) absolutely great (!) Old Town of the World. The "Belle Époque" obviously never wants to end here ... and even in the wonderful La Cepa time seems to actually - over a (... accompanied by us personally...) Period of now 43 years - to have stopped : ...still tons of Serrano ham on the ceiling, -the same beautiful half-timbering & rustic decor & especially. "Pintxos, Pintxos, Pintxos - at its best" (...only the prepared Toro head & the historical bullfighting posters are no longer on the wall - see my old photo). - Gastronomically, you really get EVERYTHING at La Cepa that makes the gourmet & gourmand heart beat faster : Fish, meat & seafood at the absolute highest level; here you should accompany all delicacies (...or at least the fish/seafood dishes...) with the wonderful regional white wine "Txakoli", which is traditionally poured into bulbous glasses from very high heights ... and then lightly & whitishly moussed. --- It is simply huge pleasure to spend your money here on manifold specialties & magnificent pintxos ... which is why we - as pensioners now - have ultimately "moved" to Roses on the Costa Brava ... where it is altogether very significantly cheaper. - The prices here, however, are completely in line with the local old town level and are by no means (touristically) excessive. - There is a dining area (Comedor) in La Cepa - separate from the bar business - and the service is very friendly and attentive. - The bar La Cepa is a wonderful & tradition-rich address in Donostia-San Sebastian ... and should definitely be visited & repeatedly !!

The food in this place may well be as good as the reviews, however, the staff were so rude that we left before sampling it. Over half an hour after having them do nothing beyond pointing out the location of the table we booked, we were still waiting for someone to engage in us in any proper way. They tended to people who arrived after us and continuously waved us away, refusing to respond to our polite requests for them to take our drink orders or even bring us water. Had they been extremely busy, I would have been more sympathetic. They weren’t busy, just unspeakably ill mannered.

As with many pintxo bars in the old town, there is a separation between the bar serving pintxos and the restaurant having its own menu.
The pintxos bar has bar seating and a limited number of tables— often reserved by tour groups doing the pintxo rounds. On both my visits the pintxos and raciones served at the bar were nicely presented and of good quality. The fare is standard and what isn’t visible on the bar is indicated on a board on the back wall.
The restaurant was a pleasant experience. Away from the crowds of the bars, and with a sound level that allowed for polite and unstressed conversation, the menu offered the largely standard options. Again, the choice of fresh ingredients is key, alongside the traditional preparation. The tuna tomato salad was very good and the various fish (merluza , bacalao) plates we ordered were superb. The deserts, particularly the flan was very nice.
The service was light touch, and not intrusive. The waiter taking our order had never heard of gluten, and when we asked for gluten free options, he indicated that we could only order the steak as a main. Of course we challenged this, and as one would expect, most of the generally gluten free items on the menu are indeed gluten free.
The pricing of the restaurant is generally in line with similar restaurants in the old town.

I visited this restaurant twice two years ago. I am disappointed how much it went down, from good to useless
Today they served turbot with a butter sauce containing vinegar. It killed the fish, I was unable to eat it
All starters equally faulty, except octopus
Prices very much up, to serious levels
Sorry, never again

Bar La Cepa is actually 2 restaurants. The bar is open for lunch and dinner and serves great tapas. The restaurant is just next to bar, and is open for dinner at 8:00 PM. We ate lunch in the bar and returned the same evening for dinner in the restaurant and both were excellent. In the restaurant they serve barnacles, which are a Galician specialties

A gluten-free option is not to bring you a baked chorizo without bread, or a skewer without bread or chips where everything is fried. Please, before advertising gluten-free, you have to think that we pay the same with bread as without bread, unfair if we do not have gluten-free bread, and also everything is fried without considering cross-contamination. Please do not advertise that they offer gluten-free tapas for the health of coeliacs.

So of course, it is a bar format rather than a restaurant even if the second room is more reminiscent of a restaurant. But, even for tapas, you find yourself in a crowded restaurant where no one can hear each other. Despite very good reviews on Google, it is clear that we were in a "tourist trap" restaurant where ultimately, there were 3.4 offerings of real dishes out of the 90% of offerings which are composed of Spanish tapas, cold meats and sandwiches. We therefore chose a few tapas which arrived very late, while others who arrived after us had already received their orders. Worse, there is such an unhealthy form of conviviality that a group of old ladies sat at our table - and ate their dishes from our table of 4 (there were three of us). What an obvious lack of good manners when the cold meats arrived late. If the Iberian ham sandwich is good, it is not worth its 9 euros nor the charcuterie plate at more than 20 euros. A real tourist trap

Four of us went in at lunchtime for some hot and cold pintxos which were excellent, the staff were so friendly and helpful. We decided to book to go back that evening for dinner. The restaurant is only small and very traditional. The food and service was so enjoyable as were the wines! The slow cooked lamb was so tasty and tender. Two of us shared a 1kg steak which was beautiful, we had it cooked medium, would normally ask for medium rare in the UK, this was perfect. Great value as well.

Bar La Cepa is a top quality bar and is well known as such. The style of the bar is perfectly old school, as is the service which is slick and smart.
The selection of pintxos is inventive and the ones we sampled were very good.
Really liked it here.

No wonder the bar is empty. Only 2 people at the bar and the waiter doing his thing without serving us. Very high prices, bad service. A Gilda 3 euros, without bread or the usual splash of oil. A pintxo gives you an omelette 3.5 euros. More expensive than the famous Nestor. One of the worst bars in the old town. What a shame, but I won't go back in. I come every day to have a drink in the old town but there are much better bars with more reasonable prices

Pity is what it gives. The bar practically without people. The prices are sky-high, €4 for a small plate of olives whose price was not listed anywhere.
They don't have complaint forms and we have to wait more than 1/2 hour for the manager to appear who has to go look for them, we don't know where until he finally shows up with it.
Of course we have filed a claim.

The food is normal, like what surrounds it, at good restaurant prices. Very good treatment. The place is noisy, a lot of people in a small space. We got a negative surprise when they charged us for filtered tap water at the price of spring water.
