Just got back from Zortsiko to celebrate the last night of our holiday and we were unimpressed. This was the eleventh Michelin star of the year for us and we left feeling that the star was totally undeserved. The chef Daniel Garcia was not present this night and you could certainly tell! We went for the degustacion menu - most... More

It was for a special occasion so booking a Michelin star restaurant should be a guarantee of quality... Well, not at all! It was the worst dinner of the holidays. The foie gras seemed frozen. My fish was poorly cleaned as I found myself chewing the intestine/digestive system of the fish! The service was nice but a bit lost and... More

Read CNtraveller review and decided to visit this "Michelin" star restaurant. We ate Traditional set menu and only gazpacho melon soup stood out. Looks like the restaurant is outdated both in dishes creativity and interior style, having spider webs hanging on cheap chandeliers.

Despite its reputation, the food at this restaurant is mediocre at best. We had the tasting menu and most of the dishes were tasteless and lacked the inventiveness you expect from Basque cuisine. The dining room is stuffy as well (didn't they get the memo that people have moved on from that style of decor?). All of this, plus very... More

We ate here on our second night in Bilbao and enjoyed the meal very much. The atmosphere is rather traditional and somewhat old-fashioned but the food uses a number of very modern scientific techniques. The food is excellent and the service is fine. No wine pairings are suggested to go with the gourmand menu but we were guided to some excellent... More

My wife and I dined here on our first day in Bilbao. We were disappointed. The restaurant is uninspired. The highlight was the amuse bouche--muscles with a barbecue sauce. My wife started with the crunchy oysters. I had the scallops. Neither was of particular note. The oysters were rather bland. I was served two scallops and one was little tough... More

I am struggling with where to start writing about my experience of Zortziko. It might just make sense to start at the beginning. I had called Arzak several weeks before our arrival in Bilbao to book a table but unfortunately they were taking a break this week and were closed. They however recommended Zortziko. I wonder what that says about... More

...and I eat out a lot. Not sure how this place has a Michelin star. Very confusing. Utterly substandard in every way. Avoid.

We went to celebrate selling our house. I expected exceptional food and got good food overall. The tasting menu was a bit of this and that, which is what I love. But most of the courses were just good. One or two were very good. For this price I expected excellent. The service was fantastic from the busboy, it was... More

We had a wonderful experience in the old style salon and tried the tradicional menu. The food was delicious particularly the ravioli. Cava and wine by the glass also delicious and surprisingly good value. For a Michelin star restaurant we thought this was excellent value for money and would highly recommend.

Description
Zortziko restaurant, just a few steps from Bilbao's iconic Guggenheim Museum, is iconic in its own way. This ultra-modern kitchen is sited in an elegant, 19th century mansion and is the place for business lunches and relaxed dinners. The formality of the setting the three dining rooms are decorated in royal French, Victorian English and a more modern style is deflated by the helpfulness and cordiality of the DJed waitstaff. Chef/owner Daniel Garcia has earned his Michelin star through refinement of flavours in a truly Basque style at once inventive and conservative. Dishes change with the season, of course, and may include dishes like starter of txangurro salad, containing crabmeat on thin spaghetti with coral dressing, main course of blue duck slow-cooked served with a sweet rioja sauce, and a tasting plate of desserts to satisfy even the most adventurous gourmet. A single table in the wine cellar, the home of more than 600 labels, is reserved weeks in advance. Celebrity-magnet Zortziko (Frank Gehry, Pierce Brosnan) is one of Bilbao's culinary star attractions.
