We foolishly thought we could easily find a nice sit-down meal in downtown Bilbao on a Saturday without booking anything. Wrong. We were turned away at several places before finding Monterrey, an old-style café/bar/restaurant “de toda la vida” with just enough room for a long,...customer-lined bar on the left and several tables along the wall on the right. Filled with what looked and sounded like local patrons. A friendly barman assured us we could get a table for two for lunch if we waited patiently. Which we did, and were not disappointed. The tortilla pintxos at the bar were delicious, as was the meal at the table we finally got, especially the artichokes and the stuffed peppers (hake filling I believe). The steamed mussels were less impressive but I like the fact that they were served with a piping hot and spicy tomato sauce which could be spooned on them, a condiment I hadn’t seen before but I gather is normal in these parts. Nice dessert and good coffee. All in all, a quality medium-priced meal with correct service.More

Stopped here while wife shopping for a coffee - empty tables outside so tried to take a coffee and sit outside - finger wagging waiter had a hissy fit and told me to go back inside - arrogant and don’t deserve custom

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Do not be put off by looks . Interesting clientele. We sat outside had the restaurant menu and we were not disappointed. Staff friendly and attentive. Not the cheapest but certainly got high quality meals with professional service.

I was with my wife in august for a lunch during a one-day visit of Bilbao. The service was a little slow, but kind. We opted for the menu offered at a reasonable price. The food rating would, according to my experience, going from acceptable...to good. At the end an average restaurant, perhaps over-rated in the Tripadvisor reviews I read before choosing it as a place to eat. Or maybe we was not lucky.More

It is good but it was the only place we ate at in Bilbao where we felt we might have overpaid a touch for a couple of items, especially the house wine. The location clearly has a bearing, it's on a pretty upmarket road, but...we were staying in one of the best hotels in BIlbao and the wine was cheaper at the hotel. The food was good, service very good and there was lots to choose from....just a bit pricey.More

A small restaurant with limited seating so book in advance. Both wife and I had hake off the a la carte. They do a reasonable menu del dia as well. Fish was very fresh and nicely prepared. Indicate whether you want bread or not as...the extras just roll up the prices. Cost was fairMore

We found this place in our first day in Bilbao, and return for breakfast all the others. The coffee is very good as well as the pintxos. Not the cheapest but one of the best. Tortilhas and ham sandwich, very good. Good service.

We had a delicious meal in Monterrey - the service and food were top class. We were warmly welcomed by the staff when we arrived. The place was buzzing with a mixture of locals and tourists. We decided to have a drink at the bar...first while we waited for a table. A waiter with very good English looked after us while we were there; he made us feel very welcomed and gave us a lot of detail about the menu and the specials. We decided to go for the Spanish ham to start – it was delicious. On the waiters recommendation we both had the buttered hake and mixed veg for the main course – we cleared our plates, it was cooked perfectly and was so tasty. For desserts we tried two traditional Spanish desserts, again recommended by our waiter and we were not disappointed. We will return to Monterrey if we find ourselves in Bilbao in the future.More
