This restaurant serves regional specialties and is great for anyone wanting to experience German food in an authentic environment. However, The restaurant changed management several years ago and unfortunately, the food isn't as good as it used to be.

When you walk towards this place you can see in the back the house if Goethe, the scenery is certainly pretty and you want to go back in time, when you step inside. Unfortunately the interior is a bit too modern, and to 1990's. It was hard imaging Goethe having a drink inside. However the food is okay, the staff... More

We have ordered the Thuringian sausage with sauerkraut and sliced dumplings with eggs. The dumplings were so salty we had to stop eating half way. Pockets of salt crystals, literally. The sauerkraut was swimming in heavy cream. We were very disappointed.

Dear guest, I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your meal with us. This is certainly not the standard we are used to serve! I hope you have complained/commented the issue to the waiter the very same moment to give us a chance to serve you a new dish? We hope to see you again next... More

We were served a menu that was supposed to be an updated version of what Goethe could have eaten there. Some original dishes and some above average. The red wine we were recommended and served was not good, find your own. Very good atmosphere, a bit slow service but friendly.

Ofcourse one is aware of Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Anna-Amalia, Frau von Stein, The wonderful Park at the river Ilm, the Bauhaus Weimar, Residenz castle and many more historical aspects like the Russian-Weimar link at times of the Zars, but dont you miss-out the lunch at the Gasthaus Zum Weissen Schwan. My strong recommendation is their Rostbrätel! This is offered at... More

Located in a very old but worthy hotel in the middle of the Old Town, this is a restaurant with very kind and efficient service, with an extensive menu. Our vegetarian courses were very tasty, with portions very (too) large. The matre d´ was very helpful. Well worth trying.

We sat on the terrace on a beautiful balmy evening and enjoyed a lovely traditional meal. Waiter was very helpful and gave us great advice. The food was absolutely delicious & well priced. The local German wine was fantastic. We really enjoyed taking in the history of this historic hotel which has played host to such famous people as George... More

The Rinderroulade was perfectly cooked; you can eat it with just a fork and it was a wonderful blending of beef, onion, and bacon just as it is supposed to be, served with great red cabbage and perfect dumplings. The Wiener Schnitzel was thin, tender, and just lightly fried, and also barely needed a knife. Paired with some Saale-Unstrut wine,... More

Traditional Thuringian food and good enough but uninspiring. Nice room, reasonable if reserved service, but that seems a character of Weimar.

Description
The tavern Gasthaus 'Zum weissen Schwan' is closely intertwined with the history of Weimar itself, the one of Hotel Elephant and, last but not least, the one of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. 'The Swan', how locals lovingly nicknamed it, is only a few minutes' walk from Hotel Elephant, Weimar. As Goethe once mentioned in a letter of 1827: "The swan welcomes everyone warmly and with open wings". Nothing has changed since then, and 'The Swan' still is the perfect place to savour the best of original Thuringian specialties.
