I was supposed to meet a group of colleagues and arrived very late, when the large restaurant was already nearly empty. The hostess did not wish to help me find my party and even discouraged me from searching for the table of 17 people on my own. I will never return!

As others have stressed, there are 2 parts to Auerbachs. One is very much a beer hall. The other is quite different, a historic restaurant in an atmosphere-rich setting. Verdict: Great service. Great setting. Marvelous fixed-price multi-cource meals, centering on traditional Saxon dishes. An astounding wine list. Every visitor to Leipzig deserves to treat herself or himself to Auerbachs.

On one hand you have the food, which is spectacular in itself, red cabbage and Saxon beef is out of this world! On the other hand you have the amazing history behind the restaurant, it's place forever enshrined in history within Goethe's "Faust". If you visit Leipzig you have to come by, the food can be a bit expensive but... More

The other reviews sum the place up fairly well - the atmosphere is fun and the food is fine but not great. I travel overseas a couple of times a year and the service for my group was the worst that I have ever experienced. We had a simple misunderstanding that could have been (and in fact was) cleared up... More

We were drawn here by the connection to the Faust story. But, apart from the name and a statue at the top of the stairs....there is no history value here. It's just a (very) expensive restaurant....and they want non-spenders to move on quickly.

Dear museum-a-day Thank you for visiting us. Too bad, that you could not enjoy your stay here. It is correct, that we want non-spenders to move on quickly, because primarily we are a restaurant. You can discover our history in one of our guided tours through the cellar. They take place every day (with application) at 11.30 am and 3... More

Wonderful interior and atmosphere, the history oozes from its muralled walls, superb food, dark beer and waitress service.

Auerbach is more about its ambiance and its place in history than about its food. Midway between the Nikolai Kirche and the Thomas Kirche, both Bach's employers at the time, the great componist is rumoured to have had a regular rest at Auerbachs. As a student Goethe often visited there, and Auerbach indeed features in Faust. Therefore it was something... More

Good food, expedient service. If I lived in Leipzig, I doubt I would eat here, as I prefer smaller establishments. But as a tourist it is in a convenient location, and it is an experience that is worthwhile.

This is such a famous place, with its legendary Faustian associations, great wall paintings, and wonderful atmosphere. But the food has become stodgy; old Saxon favourites were somewhat indigestible - compared with the last time we visited. And it is very crowded; despite booking we got a poor table, behind a pillar.

The Keller is quite a special place, where for example Goethe used to come. There was some entertainer dressed as a devil, which thankfully didn't come to our table, maybe that was a private party. The food was absolutely wonderful!
