Opposite the Nikolaikirche and enhanced by the Christmas decorations and markets just outside our window, the restaurant was warm and cosy. The waitress was pleasant and helpful. The menu was extensive: meat, game, fish, regional specialities. The choice was difficult (!) but we decided on the sauer braten with red cabbage and dumplings. Delicious!

Certainly a place for the locals to congregate--always a good sign. Reservations recommended. It can get noisy but the food is really good. I had a delicious lamb dish of tender, flavorful slices of lamb in a good gravy with generous vegetable sides, not just potatoes. Desserts are good as are the wines.

I ate here twice on a conference visit. The location is lovely; it is in a cobbled square next to the Nikolaikirche. The building is apparently the second oldest school in Leipzig, and certainly has its architectural credentials, but as the weather was warm I sat outside both times, which was perfect. The food is pretty traditional German meat and... More

We had an excellent, light meal here on our last visit. But this time we were disappointed. The food was rather heavy, typically Saxon stuff - no refinement.

We found this place almost by accident, in a small square near the Nikolaikirche, and enjoyed one of the nicest meals we've had for a long time, sitting at a table outside . We especially enjoyed the trout (served with a delicious combination of leeks with pasta) and the "Leipziger Stadtsäckel" (medallions of chicken, pork (wrapped in bacon) and beef),... More

We came here as much for the history, through its Wagner connection, as for the food. The former comments on this restaurant's hearty, warming and authentic German food are accurate. An Easter menu was on offer from which we chose typical pork and char dishes, supported as expected by creamy sauces and bread/potato dumplings. Expect to book, and arrive with... More

The Alte Nikolaischule was our choral group's dinner destination after singing a memorable post-Christmas concert at the Nikolaikirche. Unlike one fellow chorister, who could only talk about "heavy German food," I enjoyed both the place AND the meal. No one mentioned to us that the school Richard Wagner once attended had fallen into disrepair for some years, then been renovated... More

Delicious eisbein, proper autentic german food. Very slow service, had to wait over 1 hour for our meal, well worth the wait though.

The 16th century Alte Nikolaischule , almost totally derelict in 1990, has been sympathetically restored in recent years. Part of it is used by the University, while the rest houses a restaurant in the old schoolroom and a permanent exhibition on the young Richard Wagner, who received his early education here. The menu (English version available) is extensive and imaginative,... More
