Buddels is situated between Hamburg city centre and the harbour area in a small street populated with several restaurant. To most it is hence a distance from the more tourist areas in the inner city of Hamburg. Buddels is not a traditional German restaurant but more contemporary both in menu and surroundings. High raised ceiling and furniture made out of high-quality pallets makes this a more fresh. This also influences the dishes that are a combination of lasagne, tartar combined with kohlrabi and rinderfilet with truffels. The menu is a few dishes and some you have to order in advance as they are special prepared or slow cooked. The service is ok but not spectacular and it actually took some time before we felt at home and welcome, but improvements was made. The wine card is a special story. Compared with the limited choices of dishes, the win list is impressive, and all regions are present. If you want to taste German wine this is the place. You can feel the focus an passion and probably why so many locals seems to have found their way the night we visited.

What an absolute joy

This street is packed with lively restaurants ranging from hipster breakfast places, to touristy schnitzel and herring options. However, Buddels really stands apart from the rest, with a kitchen that produces magic, and a wine list that comes with sufficient description to elect and experiment nicely. Starters, mains and desserts all knocked it out of the park. And even an option for the gluten free. I can highly recommend dinner here. The Beef Wellington, the (gluten free) octopus, the (gluten free) banana split. And while the interior is charming, sitting outside also has great ambiance and even a view to the Elbphilharmonie. Well done BUDDELS !

The best place to eat traditional

The best place to eat traditional Matjes with unbelievable side Wedgies, lick your fingers dips and also super burgers for the non fisch lovers. The wine and beer are awesome and the staff really friendly. Highly recommend!

Upscale cuisine with compromises

We ate here for lunch for 5 days and the food was generally very tasty. Finely seasoned and of good quality. The portions are just the right size and the food is very well prepared (fish cooked to perfection, steak nice and pink, soups homemade). We found it annoying that every single dish had cress on it, which tasted very strong. Another annoying point is that the spinach on my plate had not been washed or something similar. There was a lot of "sand" in it that made your teeth crunch. About the shop: very nicely decorated in a beautiful location near the Speicherstadt. Very friendly staff.

Great place to enjoy a meal

I recently had dinner at Buddels. I started off with an asparagus salad which was fresh and delicious. For the main course, I ordered a halibut with clams and carrot purée which was flavorful. The prices are on the higher end but portions are generous. Service was friendly and attentive. This is a great place to enjoy a meal.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

I booked a table at Buddel's a few days before our arrival in Hamburg, based on the good reviews on Tripadviser. When we arrived the restaurant was in what I would call a tourist trap district. There was no reason for me to book a table in advance because there were plenty of seats available. The service was polite, but it was doubtful whether they knew anything about their fine wines from the menu. The food was ok. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us.

We popped in for an early lunch. Their lunch menu is not posted, so I think it must change daily. I ordered the baked potato and salad, and it was most unusual. I don't like a bunch of sour cream...but it had chives and something else in it. I ate every bite. Mu husband ordered salmon, I think.

Perfect evening in Hamburg

Sunny evening and good food! A wedding day couldn't end better. The menu has a nice selection of delicious food and drinks. The service was very attentive and left nothing to be desired! Many thanks to the team. The food really rounded off the evening and tasted very good. Again, many thanks to the kitchen team.

Disappointing Edelstuck

I ordered the Buddels Edelstuck. Cost 43€. I was hoping for a good, soft and tender steak. We ordered a bottle of wine for two persons. After 90 minutes waiting, we had finished the wine. The steak arrived. Too late, was burnt, dry and cold. Disappointing.

A small, very well furnished room that beautifully overlooks one of Hamburg's canals. Very good cuisine, although at lunch they only have simple dishes. Excellent salmon on potato rosti. Very courteous service.

great location, interesting dishes!

Travelling Hamburg we had the chance to "compare" two restaurants nearly next door - this is about the "Buddels". In a few words: hanseatic hospitality (not too many emotions visible), balance between price and quality a little bit towards the prices (but not overprized!), unique atmosphere in this historic 2 floors building. food with focus on local ingredients - interesting combinations, for our impression a few squiggles. Both fish dishes came not hot, but were immediately retaken and reheated. The explanation was that this fish is usually served not too hot ... well ... we just like it that the food remains at some temperature until we have finished. Nevertheless - as we wrote above - we were able to have two experiences: We think both are definetly worth a visit!

During our Hamburg weekend stay, we saved the best for last by booking the Buddel´s to celebrate a birthday, hoping the restaurant will give us the chance to "wow" us. ............ In short it didn´t !!! Arriving at 6:30pm we decided to stay outside, drink Cremant and enjoy the late afternoon. At around 7.30pm we decided to go inside the restaurant that is nicely furnished, the menus were promptly delivered and in 15 min, we ordered the main dishes. Nevertheless, we waited well over 90 min for our food. The wine was very good, but the food is just pretentious and nothing special. The BUDDELS Edelstück 43 € Beef At the beginning I thought they were playing a prank on the birthday boy, because this Buddels Noble Piece was nothing more than a piece of poor quality meat, max 1,5cm high, completely burnt on the outside, totally raw on the inside and cold ..... a DISASTER!!! Dessert, I had Peach Melba, with some white liquid, not a sauce, not foam, to sweet and the vanilla flavour must have been forgotten in the kitchen. I would expect a better quality from a restaurant in this category and price range! No fault to the service staff, he was trying his best - but somehow the kitchen was not in sync or up to standard. Anyway, I could have wroten this post during the dinner, I had so much time to write... I do Not recommend this place and I am sure that in Hamburg there are many other restaurants better than this one.
