Mensa Nord is a cafeteria targeted to the Humboldt-Universität community, and as a university program participant, I have found Mensa Nord to be a convenient place for lunch with colleagues. Tourists and only occasional diners, on the other hand, will likely find the cafeteria’s 3-tier...pricing structure and “Mensa Card” payment process offers less value and convenience than one might expect. With that said, Mensa Nord delivers solid cafeteria fare headlined by a diverse range of rotating menus — everything from hearty German staples and creative vegetarian/vegan dishes to Asian and Middle Eastern specialties. Located next to each food and drink item are prominently placed signs that describe each item and its corresponding 3-tier price points. And each of the ascending price points corresponds to the diner’s affiliation with Humboldt-Universität: Students > University Employees > Everyone Else. As most TripAdvisor readers fall under the “Everyone Else” pricing tier, you will likely find this cafeteria’s price points to be higher than expected. This is especially true when most side dishes and condiments, like ketchup, are priced à la carte. These “extras” quickly add up, so paying particular attention to what is (or is not) included with any entree can help avoid surprises at check-out. This being a university cafeteria, a Mensa Card is also required for payment. No cash, EC/credit cards, or any other forms of payment are accepted. Mensa Cards can be purchased at the Kiosks located in the foyer near the cafeteria’s entrance at the (current) cost of €1,50, and from there, all additional deposited amounts can be used for purchases within the cafeteria. While Mensa Nord is without a doubt a great asset to the Humboldt-Universität community, tourists and only occasional diners will likely find that this cafeteria’s non-student price points and Mensa Card payment process are simply not worth the added cost and hassle.More

Been going here for over a year now. Although a university cafeteria, anyone can eat here. However, payment is by a special card only that machines dispense (and which you have to load with cash). Dishes start at Euros 2.45 for non-student card holders and...- a big advantage for the hungry - you can really load up your plate as it is self service (not for the meat/fish items though). You will be amazed at the art of 'food piling' some students have perfected. Initially, it comes across as one of the best food finds ever but the dishes repeat constantly and it may be hard after a while to select what really suits you in that moment. Dishes are marked if they are vegetarian, vegan, organic, etc. and a sort of "traffic light guide" trying to steer you to the healthier options. Being able to individually select a meat, a vegetable and a carb (and leave out what you do not want) is a big plus. Loads of vegetarian options but the higher quality ingredients sometimes push up the price to above that of the meat dishes. All condiments cost extra (cheese on your pasta or risotto? 50 cents, for example, even adding some ketchup at the cashier will set you back 0.15). Salt content tends to be rather high - do drink plenty of fluids afterwards. The best thing about MHUN is the salad bar and I am personally a huge fan of the muesli that is always offered among the healthy desert bar. It is nice to sit among the young students, although in winter when you cannot sit outside anymore, finding a seat downstairs can be a challenge (there is also upstairs seating). In summary, if you are on a tight budget in Berlin and do not expect too much from your food, this is the place for you - you won't find anything better. Food is available Mo - Fr from 11 - 14:30.More

Even though the cafeteria is meant for student of HU, the mensa Nord allows guests to have lunch too. One has to buy the mensa card at the machine outside the entrance as cash is not accepted. The variety available is quiet amazing and you...pay a fixed price for a plate. So you can stuff as much as you can. Closes around 2 PM.More
