I definitely recommend this place for someone who wants to try real Russian cuisine for reasonable money. Pelmeni (dumplings) are actually "as mama make", and crepes are delicious! On the other hand, the beer choice consist of two Baltika variants and Baltika with sprite. Quite slow and inattentive service and Russian pop-music are main disadvantages.

The restaurant has a reputation of having an austere interior, and indeed it is quite sober inside. But start ordering and you will realise that the superficial looks are deceitful. The place offers Baltika beer for starters and a set of vodkas to go along with the meal (we had a pine-kernel vodka which turned out to be an excellent... More

We enjoyed our meal here, but it was not outstanding. Looking at other reviews of this place, we might have hit it this place on an off night. The sauces were rather thin, and for two of us in our group, the food (dinner) was cold. Further, the recipes did not match the robust nature of memories of our grandparents'... More

I'm finding it difficult to fault this nice Russian restaurant - the food was very nice, authentic and not too expensive. Service was friendly and efficient. Good atmosphere and location. Recommended.

Its been a while since I had Olivye (the Russian salad) with Doktorskaya kolbasa and canned peas, 15 years to be precise. In other words, very authentic cooking and, by the way, friendly service. Its off the beaten path, but still within 15 minute drive from Karl Marx Allee area attractions like East side Gallery and Computer game's museum

We ate here twice recently when in Berlin for a week. The atmosphere is informal and the food perfect for the cold weather. We were encouraged to drink complementary shots of freezing Russian vodka, it seemed rude to refuse. The excellent food is reasonably priced, I would recommend this fun restaurant.

this seems like a fairly new restaurant in a very seedy part of friedrichshain. the front and entrance almost make one turn around before entering, but inside it's very pleasantly decorated and comfortable. we were a large group, and i don't think there was anyone who didn't enjoy their dinner. not the best russian food i've ever had, but good,... We do not regret our decision to try Matreshka during our week in Berlin. We did not have a reservation and arrived at about 8:45 pm. We were told that a table would be available in about 20 minutes, so we came back after a short walk. The table was just being cleared and the owner welcomed us explained that... More

Great food at great prices! Friendly service in German, Russian and English. Pilmeni just like mama makes! And the vodka - brilliant! Well worth a visit :)

Staying in Friedrichshain

Neighborhood Profile
When you arrive at Warschauer Strasse in the heart of the district, you have found one of Berlin’s party hotspots. At night in Friedrichshain, the energy is palpable and the streets of this old worker's quarter are full of street musicians. On one hand, you may find a bar with international crowds, electronic music, long lines and panoramic views - on the other, an outside venue by old train yards featuring decrepit buildings and live alternative music. No matter your taste, the best way to end a night out in Friedrichshain is sitting by the Spree River at the East side gallery, the longest and best preserved piece of the Berlin Wall, watching the sun rise over the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge.
