Located close to Gendarmenmarkt, A warm, friendly and very popular eatery. Food was affordably priced and very tasty. We were taken there by friends who live in Berlin and it seemed very popular with the locals. I had The Original as a main course which was a rather large pork knuckle (in one piece) with lots of very tasty crackling.... More

Good beer; good food; cheap, for this part of Berlin. Don't go expecting a find dining experience as this is a Bavarian café cum beer hall where you find a table and sit down to await someone to serve you. Service comes with a wry German sense of humour and prickly approach to customer service - this is Berlin, after... More

Probably the most affordable eatery in this area of Berlin. Good, honest german food made well abd affordable. Try the massive pork knuckle for only €14,50. They brew their own beer so dont forget to give it a try. Normally very busy so you may need to book

We loved Bavarian food when we visited Munich (and Austrian food in Austria), and since Berlin doesn't have the same type of food, we sought this place out. It was a large, relaxed restaurant, a little more tame than a beer hall but more casual than a restaurant. The service was very warm, even though my German is poor at... More

Just pass by this place and don't regret, also don't give it a chance later. Today we saw this restaurant in some different apps having thousands of reviews and decided to try it. The bad impression started at the front door but we didn't pay attention to the signs and kept is in a positive attitude. What we confronted after:... More

.... my days back in Munich when sitting in a Bavarian beer house was nothing special but a common thing to do in your natural environment. This time in Berlin's mid town center The Augustiner was half empty, calm and friendly. The staff running around in Bavarian " costumes" are Not from Bavaria therefore it sounds funny to me. But... If you find yourself in Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin and want an authentic taste of Germany, Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt is great. Not one for the veggies, but then again, if you're happy with chips and salad, you could do a lot worse than this place - so give it a whirl! Tasty, filling dishes with a lot of pork and potatoes.... We visited this restaurant in Feb as we were only in Berlin for a quick visit. I have told so many people about the amazing goulash and am trying to find a recipe so I can replicate it at home. Hubby had the pork knuckle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were great and coloring books for our 4 year wold... More

Second visit here, always a friendly welcome with excellent staff. Beer and wine is excellent. The food is as you would expect very traditional but extremely tasty. The portions are very robust too. Give it a go

Went here for recommended German food and atmosphere. Really enjoyed the food and the staff were very pleasant and attentive. We liked it so much we went back there 2 nights later! The decor is authentic including the staff attire, which all adds to the atmosphere!

Staying in Mitte

Neighborhood Profile
Mitte
The center of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighborhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
