Rude waiters. I don't know if it's just a cultural difference between Germany and America (I am American), but in America we greet our patrons warmly and focus on service. I arrived at Augustiner-Keller after getting off a train, wanting to kill some time before...my next train. I approached a waiter with a question I had about the food. He snapped at me, "SIT. DOWN. MADAM." in such a loud, intense, and mean way that I immediately gathered my belongings and just left the premises. This is beyond just a cultural difference - I don't know of any place where it's okay to yell at young women visiting your restaurant. This was my first and only exposure to Germany, and based on this interaction, I am not impressed. I personally will not be returning for a long time. Maybe not ever.More
I visited Munich in April 2015 and June 2018. The automated date below is not correct. It was the first beer garden on our trip. Only a few blocks from our hotel. It was absolutely amazing. Visited many times. Incredibly huge. The service was awesome. Our...first beer came out of a wooden barrel 20 feet in front of us. It was a liter of the lager. I almost wept it was so good. The beer and the food was outstanding. Make sure you go inside of their indoor spot and venture into the basement. Pretty cool as long as you’re not claustrophobic. Its a tourist attraction.More
Very similar to Hofbräuhaus but feels less touristy for some reason.
Excellent beer and good German pub fare. As it was raining, the place was quite packed.
It took quite some time for the food to arrive.
The Aufustiner Keller is classy in Munich. The Beer is Perfect and the atmosphere is typical for a Brauhaus.
The size of the meal was not that big. The quality was really good and the dessert was super.
It is not only a tourism spot...you will definitely find some local people there.More

I believe the reservations apply to the Keller building (inside) for sure and possibly for the waiter-service (tables with table cloths in a marked off section) section of the garden. But part of the fun is watching your! liter mass of bier being drawn, cold and foamy, from the enormous wooden barrels. At absolute peak times you might have to stand around for a while to get six seats together, but even on weekends there are usually tables free, albeit a big of distance away from the food and beer. Stand with your back to the food line and look at the playground: up and to the right there are almost always empty or nearly empty tables. ---Bob & Ellie Tupper, authors, “Drinking In the Culture, Tuppers’ Guide to Exploring Great Beers in Europe.”
