I suppose you go to the Hofbrauhaus for the experience of drinking beer in one of the oldest breweries in Munich, but our experience was really soured by the terrible service. We sat at a table that had not been bussed and continued to sit there for 20 minutes before someone came to take the dirty dishes away. The waiter took our order and brought two correct drinks and one wrong one. We were able to wave the waiter down about 10 minutes later to tell him the mistake, for which he apologized, but the third drink didn’t arrive until much later. Then our first food item arrived and the waiter said not to wait for the other food to start eating because it would get cold; the other dishes arrived about a half hour later. The food and beer tasted good, but when it came time to leave, I asked the waiter for the bill and he said ok. However, after another 25 minutes it was clear he had forgotten about us. I waved him down again and he apologized and gave me the bill, making sure to point out that the bill did not include the tip... Overall, I’m glad I went, but don’t feel I’ll ever need to go back. Those 2.5 hours could have been better spent doing something else unique to the area.

One of the most iconic beer halls in Munich. Some reviews talk about slow service. I assume they are speaking in comparison of getting food out quickly and giving your bill so your table can be turned quickly to maximize profits. In Europe meals are a social event and is not to be rushed. In fact you will not get your bill unless you ask. In beer halls and wine gardens in Germany and Austria, communal seating is the norm. You may share a table with 2-3 other parties. Now, about my experience at Hofbräuhaus: This was my first experience in Munich. I didn’t realize that Carnaval in Europe is celebrated like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. That was the date of my visit there with friends. The easiest way to get there is to take the S bahn to the Marienplatz and it is about 3 blocks away, a short 8 minute walk. Needless to say it was packed. However we came in around 8 pm and got seated in 15 minutes. That evening the beer only came in the BIG tankards. Not necessarily a bad thing but I really wanted to try the original lager and the dark. The menu was massive. If you don’t have Google Translate on you phone, ask for an English menu. I had the roast pork, others had schnitzel, bratwurst and sausages. If your meal doesn’t come with German potato salad, splurge on this as a side. The beer came quickly and because the kitchen was slammed it gave us plenty of opportunity to listen to the German band doing versions of pop and traditional German music. The party atmosphere and costumes spanned from the traditional, to comical, to sexy. When the food came, the portions were very good. All my commented on the superb quality of the food. My Roast pork was thick sliced, fairly lean, and savory. It came with a potato dumpling. It was very filling. If my experience was this positive on arguably the most busy day of the year, yours would be probably even better. However that evenings ambience was priceless.

Grab a seat at any long trestle table and greet your neighbors while waiting to order a liter of dark or blonde beer and a crispy schweinshaxe mit Spaetzel and a large pretzel. You'll get the beer first and you'll need a second before you finish eating so you can have the opposite brew than before. Don't worry and take your time to talk and laugh and sing along with oompah band.

Popped in for beer and lunch. We’re ignored fir a long time. People who arrived after we arrived were attend to first. Then when we did get our food and asked for a wee bit more of mustard ( they served about a half tablespoon of mustard with the cheese and bread platter) were told a flat “no” that “it’s the amount you are given for that platter.” We would have happily paid extra but no option to order more. Just interesting.

We did not enjoy our experience here tonight. We asked for an English menu but the waiter couldn’t get one. We gave it one star because they did have decent WiFi so we were able to read the English menu on line to order. Other than that, the waiters were rude, the food slow (over an hour to arrive) and one meal did not arrive for another 20 minutes. This was even though our level was half empty. The food was totally forgettable, and in some cases just bad, and cold when it wasn’t supposed to be. The toilets were dirty. The restaurant is designed for tour buses. You can get much better food at other locations in this great town.

Hofbräuhaus is a total tourist trap, but it’s also a place where you can enjoy a typical Bavarian “Maas” spelled as “Maß” in Germany. This is a one litre beer in a glass that’s almost to heavy to lift. Hofbräuhaus offers a big beerhall with live traditional Bavarian music and the main hall – by the main entrance, has impressive ceiling paintings. I was told the food is below average, but never tried. The beer is good and the experience is well worth the slightly higher drink prices. It’s also a good place to meet other travellers, less so locals

A classic Biergarten with much fun history. Make sure to read the story that is posted outside. While the food isn’t the best, I still highly recommend to anyone visiting Germany and wanting a true feel for Bavaria. There is live music, traditional dress and food. The rooms are large and loud. Anyone that comes to visit me in Germany gets this as the first meal after picking them up from the Munich airport before heading home.

Went down on a weekday evening for some dinner and the place was half-full. This meant that we got our own benches and didn’t have to share seats. One (I guess) downside was that they didn’t have a menu in English, so the waitress directed us to use the camera on our google translate app to decide what to get. Which fair enough, if you’re already so popular with tourists and locals alike you don’t really need to change anything or try to improve. People are still going to come. We had the pork knuckle and roast chicken which was superb. The beer was quite yummy as well, and they go around tables selling the biggest pretzels I’ve ever seen. Good experience.

I love and loathe this place. On the positive side, it's a fabulous building with a long history, it's a "must see" for visitors to the town, and the HB beer is actually pretty good. On the negative, it's immensely over hyped, always overcrowded, loud, plays to the tourist market unashamedly and the food is a bit mediocre. . Go there once, so you can say you have, but then go to better places (such as the Hofbrau Kelleron the East of the town)

I had been to the Hofbrauhaus in Chicago a couple of times, but never to the one in Munich. I am glad I did; however, I will say that the service was a bit slow. I will give them a break because the restaurant is large and the place was packed. I came here with a group of friends after seeing the atrocities of Dachau so we were all in need of something to relax us. This place did not let us down. While drink our liter sized dark German beers, we enjoyed several pretzels from the pretzel lady going from table to table. Two of my friends went with the famous pork knuckle while another went with the Wollwurst sausage made from veal and pork. I selected the baby suckling pig, which you do not find on a lot of menus. Everything was delicious and well worth it. I only wish we were not so far away from the band.

I have come to Hofbräuhaus many times, as I lived in Munich in the past as ate there other times I visited the city, but this time it couldn't go worse. I went to Hofbräuhaus last Saturday, 27th October. The restaurant was full as we arrived at peak hour, 9.30pm, on a bank holiday. We struggled to find a free spot. When we finally did, and ordered food, the waiter told us that given the high demand, the kitchen had to close earlier. We were surprised, but went on ordering beers. To our surprise, other tables kept getting food for a long while, so we started to suspect something was going on. We spoke to another waiter, and explained that we wanted to order food, but the waiter who had our table assigned told us the kitchen was closed. He was shocked, and offered to take our order, but at that moment our waiter appeared and told the other waiter to go away from his table. We tried to speak to him and understand why he was not taking food orders. Then we realized, he just wanted to finish his day. He kept kicking out people arriving to tables under his domain, and even use fake reservation papers to explain the tables were reserved and no one could sit there. He realized we were witnessing everything, and by 11pm decided it was time for us to leave the restaurant (it closes at midnight), so he angrily asked us to pay. After some verbal confrontation, I went to pay and reproached him for his attitude towards us and all the other clients in his area. After I paid, he aggressively grabbed from my hand, and he told me we will be kicked out. He came back 2 minutes later with the security guards, who invited us to leave while the waiter was weirdly challenging us pointing with his fingers at his eyes and us while staring at us. Outside, we explained the whole situation to security. They seemed to be shocked by the waiters' attitude, apologize on his behalf, and offered to contact me (they asked for our names and a phone number) the next day after they had talk more calmly about what happened. Despite that, we were kicked out anyway. Of course, no one has phoned me, and it was crystal clear from the beginning that it was just mere strategy to kick us out and move on. It is pretty shameful to see how workers in such popular place behave in such rude, unprofessional and even dishonest way.

As the restaurant is famous and we gave a try and went there at around 1 ish pm. The restaurant was crowded and service was so so as so many customers! We waited for our food ore than 50min, staff apologized for the tardiness of the food delivery. We ordered Rostbratwürstl, Bierbratl, 1 HB Weiss alkokolic, 1HB Münchner Weisse, the bill was 35 euro and staff asked how much we were going to tip them.

Who walks into the hofbräuhaus must know that this is a touristic place, and they treat you like they know you come there for the typical experience and then you never come back again. The service is in fact very poor. The waitress was rude and behaved like she didn't have time for us, but she became kind and friendly only when we tipped her (they ask for it). Nevertheless, the place is astonishing: very central, huge, and with a beautiful internal garden (perfect for summer). The food is average: if you want to have the finest dinner, this is not the place. However, if you want to have dinner in a nice (even though loud) place and drink good beer, you have to endure a bit of rudeness and chaos.

Touristic trap...overpriced and poor service. Had to wait over 45 minutes for a lousy sausage after our beers finished. Waiter was no help either. He said the kitchen was too busy although the restaurant was not even half full

The food and service was underwhelming. We went mid day on a Saturday without reservations and were seated immediately. Be prepared to sit at the same table with other parties. It was very warm inside to eat, and the food was so-so, but you can’t beat the beer and the atmosphere. It is full of tourists, picture taking and documenting bucket list memories, but the locals are there as well and it feels like you’re part of a unique German family experience. I wouldn’t pass it up!
