Veltter’s has the best Schweinshaxe in Heildelberger. The restaurant is very typical German, here you will find the most popular german dishes such as Schweinshaxe, tiroler, rostbratwürstchen, schnitzel.... service is amazing, you won’t have to wait to be seated and to get a beer to your table. The beers are brewed in house which make even more special. Price is great for the portions you will get and what I love the most the building is old and the deco is very traditional. Also to acknowledge the reviews below I am not sure how you would wait 20 minutes for a menu as all the menus are layout on every table. I give 10 out 10, I would definitely recommend the place.

You know that German restaurant image you have in mind? This is the restaurant. Is what I am picturing when I read the old German stories with snow , fire, beer and food. The restaurant was recommended by the hotel reception ( we stay at NH Heidelberg) and we decided to follow the recommandation. The setup is nice, 1 min walk from the bridge and inside you discover that Oktoberfest atmosphere you look for when you visit Germany. The food was average, with a small plus for the Goulash soup who was good. The beer they made in-house is also average and, overall if I add the location, the setup, food and drink, plus a service where is better to speak German if you want to eat, I will say the experience was very good. BUT this experience is ours and I suggest you set your expectations when you go there: German experience, not 1 start Michelin :-)

Another great restaurant in Heidelberg. We stopped off for some beers and decided to share something small, which was not small at all! We had typical Brotzeit which is a platter with some bread, cold meats and cheeses. The beer was great. Highly recommended.

I used to like this restaurant a lot, but today the service was lousy. When our food arrived, the waitress dropped the gravy from one of the dishes on my and my partner's legs, her reaction was not to apologise immediately, but to ask if it was hot (it was, of course...). She told her colleague to give us something "on the house", so we were hoping that the three of us would not be charged for drinks or something like that, but when the bill arrived we were charged for everything as if nothing had happened. On top of that, they also forgot my friends bread, which was included in her dish. At the end of dinner they did offer to give us other complimentary drinks, but after the bad experience we just wanted to finish our meal and go home.

I stopped in this place based on number of reviews however I found that service was slow. They weren't busy and yet it took a few minutes to be seated and then again to order. We ordered tasting flights of which the waitress just dropped off and walked away without describing the beers. I had to call someone over from the bar to ask what they were but he only took guesses which I thought odd that the bartender didn't recognize their product. The food was OK but again it took awhile to get the check. I regret having stepped foot in here and recommend other travelers take their chances on another dining establishment.

A friend recommended Vetters, and it was near our hotel so we gave it a try. They warned us that it would take about 45 minutes to get our food when we walked in and they were about right. The beer and Riesling wine were both good! There wasn’t anything special about the pretzels, so skip those! Our schnitzel was good, as was the mushroom soup. Service was slow, though. We noticed that the English menu mentioned that Tip was not included in the price on the menu, the German menu didn’t say anything about a tip.

Excellent microbrewery with good traditional German fare recommended by our guides. They particularly recommended that we try their beer which is considered the best in the city. We had to rip traditional Pilsner as well as the Weiss beer both of which were very good. The staff was very friendly and helpful and sitting outside was a joy. The people around us who are eating traditional German meals stated that they were actually quite good. Overall, it seems like a good restaurant to go to Weil in the old city of Heidelberg

My wife and I had a day in Heidelberg as part of a tour and stopped here for lunch during our free time. We were very glad that we did. It was not crowded when we went and had no problems getting a table. It had outside seating on a side street which wasn't crowded. The service was very prompt. I had an excellent wheat beer. I had a sausage platter which was good. My wife had veggie pasta dish which was excellent. We split a cheese platter which was very generous and delicious. For the quantity, price, and taste, it was one of the best meals on our trip.

We tried a bunch of entires and sides. Our favorites were the goulash soup, spatzel, and sausages. They were amazing. The apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce was not good at all. Might be one of the worst I’ve ever tried lol. Their home brewed beers were amazing. Service was great and they were all friendly and helpful. So close to main sites and shopping. Prices were reasonable.

1. Me and my friends, we do this often. We take a couple of bottles of beer, have a great time near the Neckar and then later in the evening come back and return the bottles to get our deposit back. 2. I also highly recommend the food 3. Once the waiter was a bit pushy with the tips. But I have seen this trend in several restaurants in Altstadt unfortunately.

We were looking forward to a nice evening with the family in a brewery and reserved a table especially. However, we were placed in the neighbouring building, which has more of a snack bar character (cheap furniture, not even the hint of a brewery atmosphere). The allocated table could only accommodate five people, although we had reserved for six people. Fortunately...?...there was another corner table right next to the toilet entrance, to which we squeezed. The beer was good, but the food was not special. The fried potatoes were just heavily seasoned fried potatoes, without onions or bacon cubes. The Tyrolean Gröstl had far too much sausage content and was therefore completely salty. But this could be compensated with the completely tasteless salad. The skin of the neck was flabby and the dumplings... well. After dinner, for coffee, dessert and other drinks, we went somewhere else. The only bright spot was the great service, which we also rewarded with a decent tip, but we will definitely not stop here again.

One of the many things I like about Germany is that you can get a really good meal in popular tourist areas of many cities and unlike the UK you rarely find overpriced rip-off establishments preying on visitors. As part of a group of seven I had a splendid hearty German meal in this atmospheric pub-restaurant in the centre of the old town. It seems to be popular with visitors and locals. The beer is brewed in their own brewery and was excellent. Service was pleasant and fast - we did not experience any of the problems noted by some other reviewers. The Schweinshaxe was fantastic.

Ate here on a Sunday evening and it was a good job we made a reservation as it was very busy, the menu was available in English and was very good with far too many choices! I ended up with the meatloaf and my wife went for the breaded schnitzel and both dishes were excellent. The staff all spoke very good English and genuinely wanted to make our visit enjoyable, the house beer we tried was very nice and there are plenty of choices available. We would certainly visit again when in Heidelberg.

It was miserable throughout, the only positive thing about our visit was the service. The salad was completely tasteless, but very expensive, the 4 meat dishes were all worse than the last. The tables were far too close together, stuffy, completely overcrowded and to top it all off, 2 toilets and that too in front of such a large crowd. Never again!

This site recommend in all guides, but we were disappointed. The food is correct, but can be eaten elsewhere in Heidelberg and better priced. The dishes they serve are scarce for such a high price. When I say scarce I mean two pieces of veal with 6 cooked potatoes for €25. We feel quite disappointed!
