I was expecting either touristic place with crap food or a posh restaurant in a 5 star hotel... suprisingly it is non of this! Tremendous view from the terrace, tasty food, reasonable prices and positive waiters - what could be better on a sunny day in the mountains?

When we arrived in Chamonix late on a summer morning, we were discouraged by the long lines and wait for the teleferique up to the Aiguille du Midi (3842 meters), so instead we took the cogwheel train up to the Mer de Glace (1913 meters) and discovered Le Grand Hotel Restaurant du Montenvers where we had a table for two... Booked a lunch as a prelude to a Chamonix Cosmo Jazz concert, so it would have been understandable if the service was challenged. But no, the terrace table was ready and if the courses were well spaced who could complain with such views and activity (trains!) to drink in? The menu du jour was innovative and well presented, the wine... More

We had decided to "splash out" on a meal at the grand hotel. However when we got there it was only about 25 euros for the menu of the day. the staff were superb, welcoming, smiling efficient, prompt- many of the things we have got used to NOT having in France and Switzerland. The view and seating position outside is... More

I disagree with the previous reviewer. We had an excellent lunch yesterday. The staff was kind and accommodating, offering a little toy to our children, in addition to crayons and colouring book. The food was very good - much more varied than much if the "mountain fare". My trout was gorgeous. All arrived with perfect timing. We were offered a... More

The views from the terrace are stunning, watching waterfalls and the snowcapped mountains around, but this is not a restaurant to visit if you like service with a smile or even reasonable service. After we eventually got attended to (I won't call it served) we had ages to wait - time to watch the constant pantomime of potential customers being... More

Ok you can probably get cheaper/nicer food in the town of Chamonix, but here, sitting outside next to the glacier - watching the waterfalls of snow cascading down into the valley and sitting on a sunny day amongst the mountains, you really feel like a Hollywood star of the 50's! We had a very nice lunch - fish or lamb... More
