Great place to eat in Paris. Full of locals, menu is classic French food very well cooked. Tables are shared and you cannot sit for drinks or dessert only. Old traditional boiserie decoration, escargot, foie gras, creme brûlée. Good menu, great prices, but a bit too much of a factory line feel to it. At peak dinner hours you must line up for more than 2 hours if you care to dine here. So either go for an early or a very late dinner if you want to avoid a long line. It is always full anyway. If you don't like something and decide to go, they don't really care, as they have an unbelievably long line curling around the lobby specially organised for this purpose. Service is extremely quick, mostly because they want you to eat and be on your way as quickly as possible as each table rotates up to 5 times per evening. It was, however, my favourite fast dining experience in Paris.

We went here for lunch while in Paris before making our way back to the airport. We got a table right away, though were warned we may have to queue: you can't prebook. It's an amazing venue with people packed in everywhere. Lots of staff traditionally dressed and they write your order on the tablecloth so you don't get a bill. We both ordered fish with side dishes of spinach and potatoes but the fish already came with potatoes - I said to the waitress she should have warned us! I say the food is homely as it's like home-cooked dishes, rather than haute cuisine or nouvelle cuisine. This is a really authentic Parisian institution (everyone seems to stop for a proper lunch) and it's a great experience to be part of, as well as being good value. Don't go here if you want something more fancy.

We went in here as we hadn’t booked anywhere and all the places we found were full. You have to queue up outside to get a table but the place is so big they soon fit you in. The tables are however very close together and we had a very loud couple next to us, but they would still have been a pain if they were farther away. The service is very impersonal almost like a fast food place without the “have a nice day” the food is quite plain but is ok as it’s very inexpensive, and it arrives immediately after you order. The wine was brilliant one of the nicest bottles of rose we had while in Paris and €12 per bottle.

Myself and my friend came here because she had remembered this place from years ago. It was a massive Disappointment, she said it has changed a lot.
The first half of the restaurant had half of their tables empty, yet the maître d took us to the end of the restaurant and seated us on a table with another couple!! This was most bazarre as it does not say that this is the norm there!
We looked back and there were many empty tables (it was about 1:30pm), i went back to the entrance and asked for a table again & a different man pointed at an empty one! So i called my friend over. I have no idea why the other man would of sat us with strangers this was not what you wanted!
We ordered our food (Steak, not amazing flavour but cooked well and came out within minutes), although it came out before we even had our drinks which is not normal. Food very cheap but every main meal that i saw come out looked so dry!! apart from the steak, nothing seemed to be served with a sauce at all. The chicken and chips looked particularly miserable. The english version of the menu i don't think did the puddings justice as all sounded very bland, whereas some photos on here look like lovely puddings, not sure what they ordered but all we had written was "pineapple", "chocolate mouse", "caramel cream". Think that might be bad interpretation. Waiters didn't once ask how your meal was or check if you wanted another drink. When we asked for the bill our waiter finally got some personality from that man (he took our order too), but when he joked with us he was "hushed" by the strange maitre d who had sat us with another couple!
Would not get your hopes up about this place, sure there are much better places to go. Cheaper is not always better.

Le bullion does not accept reservations, however if you get on the line and you are not the right amount of people you have to wait an absurd amount of time to get seated.
In my case 2 out of 4 people got here at 19:20, and we were refused to be seated because the others were missing. After 20 mins when the other part if our company came were were asked to get in line again for 40 more minutes (even after getting assurance from the manager we will be seated on the next free table).
A quick note - one person from the party was with broken leg and was asked to still wait in the line.
The cuisine might be good, but service and basic customer care is absurd! I cannot recommend this restaurant for vacation as you'll be extremely disappointed and your night will be absolutely ruined.

My expectations for food quality before visiting Boullion Chartier were not high knowing that it is meant to be a place for affordable French food. Priority was to meet friends and have a get-together.
Not many positives to derive from dining here though. Long lines, terrible service and bland food.
Service was atrocious and the waiters are extremely unhelpful. Waited 20 minutes to even order because one of the waiters exclaimed that his shift ended so we had to find another waiter.
Extremely bland food.
Even if it was for 4€ a dish, I wouldn't pay for it.

Like going back 30 years, paper table overlays on which the waiter writes your order...fun and the food is reasonable as well. Not 3 star stuff but good old fashioned French style food in a no nonsense setting. Crowded when we visited, fami.ies, students, tourists all getting value for money as well as a unique French experience. Try it, you will not be dissappointed

It is one of the legendary brasserie de Paris, always crowded but with such an efficient system of waiters & and kitchen that they serve you in 1h. The venue is art deco and really charming as it reminds La Belle Epoque.... The food is very good and at prices different to see in Paris, they clearly count on the volume of guests to make the restaurant affordable for everyone. Waiters are very friendly and efficient,

It’s all about the overall experience at the Bouillon Chartier: the decor, the food, the service.
I have visited a number of times when we have guests visiting.
The food is simple French fare and you can find all the French favourites on the menu. And it is cheap! 3 courses usually costs about 22€ per person. The wine of the month is normally 15€ for a bottle.
The thing I find most impressive is always the service. The waiters are skilled and fast; I have seen one waiter carrying all 8 main courses by himself so that a large group could be served their food all together! On top of that, they scribble your order on your paper table cloth but memorise your order to tell the kitchen and never bring you the wrong dish! When it comes time to settle the bill, the waiters adds up your order on the paper table cloth (often without a calculator).
The downside though is that at peak evening dining hours the queue can be very long but if you don’t mind eating a little earlier or a lot later (the restaurant is open until well after 11pm) you can avoid the long queues. The experience is worth the wait!

So popular, so crowded but well worth it. Had to be 300 people . After 8 pm lines are way out the door and if there is an empty chair at your table, they put some stranger with you. So make sure your table is full. Food is not the best but the atmosphere makes up for it all. Don't order the house wines, and make sure the bread is fresh - they recycle left overs - LoL,

I often read the reviews of this restaurant the bad ones and laugh to myself, they all say rude staff, people just don’t understand how many tables their waiter has to serve they don’t have time to deal with awkward or indecisive people who want special attention or their food cooked in a particular way or the attention they usually demand in a restaurant.
If you time it just right you walk straight in, if not it can be a long queue but it moves quickly and there’s a large cross section of clientele which makes the queue more a part of the experience. The food is classic Boullion style meaty stews, beef bourguignon et al, starters are fantastic choices there’s a vegetable soup that’s delicious for €1.00 “yes one euro”
Desserts are fantastic, I had a rum baba which is worth going to the restaurant for that alone.
So we had a three course meal for two with a very decent bottle of wine and one expresso for the grand total of €55.00.
Chartier isn’t just about good food for a bargain price, the tables are small and close together and you can usually be next to interesting people who are often sociable and there’s an element of theatre about the place, just watching people come and go of all ages, nationality, classes it’s fun. We’ve been coming here for twenty years and when we’re back in Paris again it’s the first place on our list.

The Boullion Chartier delivers what it promises: traditional inexpensive dishes in an authentic noisy atmosphere. Bouillons emerged during the second half of the 19th century as affordable alternatives to bistros for working class clients but with an attention to decoration and atmosphere. Do I mind being placed with total strangers at a table? Not at all, it’s all part of the experience. (Although my last visit I was spoiled and had a table to myself.) For the more adventurous spirits there is traditional “tête de veau” and other French favorites. The wait staff write your order in the paper tablecloth progressively and keep track for the final bill, amazing math skills. Simple but tasty wines. It’s just a fun institution, not trying to be something it’s not. Be prepared to queue a bit, but it goes fast, they are very, very well organized. Did I really need a scoop of butter on my Roquefort? Does it really matter?

I love Chartier. It is an experience not to be missed on a visit to Paris. For 22 consecutive years I led a party of some 40 History students and 5 colleagues to this gem in the month of February. On the first day of our stay, having studied the delights of the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre, we would arrive for our evening meal at Chartier. The initial impact is amazing! The huge wall mirrors all around reflect the chandeliers, the tables, and the waiters scurrying around laden with plates of food. And the waiters are clad in black trousers and waistcoats, white shirts and long white aprons. Seated there enjoying the inexpensive food there is an ambience akin to being in a Renoir painting. What an experience! One that I always repeat with family and friends on every visit to Paris.

Not quite sure what are all the positive reviews about... We came here on our first night in Paris due to reading all about it and the positive reviews but was extremely disappointed.
Luckily we didn’t have to queue and was seated straightaway. The actual venue was nice and lively but you do get seated in very cramped spaces and tables with people you don’t know. We were sat in a table for four with another couple who were lovely so had nice small talks with them.
The food we ordered was just tasteless. The chicken I had was so dry and had no seasoning at all so couldn’t really eat it. My boyfriend’s steak was nothing special and we ordered a starter that was just swimming in oil. The best bit was the french fries and the sangria. Our main really put us off so we didn’t bother with dessert.
I would not come back here again and definitely do not recommend it as it is simply a waste of money - you’re better off going to McDonald’s!

I had a bad experience at this restaurant. The waiter was very rude to my friends and I, I believe it was because we were not French as he was very polite to the French people at the table next to us. Firstly, he spoke very rudely to my friend when she asked for a glass of water, questioning why she should order it, almost as if she should be ashamed of herself for ordering water and not another beverage. When he brought my chips to me, instead of placing them in front of me, he flung them in a dramatic fashion across the table causing them to scatter across the table. He never apologised for his aggressive actions, nor did he bring me a new plate of chips. I was very disappointed with the service at this restaurant. I will add that the food was quite cold.would not recommended absoulty a tourist trap
