Very nice food, professional service, would certainly return, booking would be recommended as the restaurant was full.

Big portions of traditional French dishes. Different prized menus, do take one with cheese, they bring a big trolley and you can choose as many as you can eat at that point. A true surprise on the other side of the river in Epernay!

Enjoyed a meal with our teenage children here. SO French, like meals we used to have 20 years ago. Very traditional, not in any way adventurous. Food was good, sauces excellent. Host very convivial, but service not efficient. We got the impression it would have helped to have been French. They were getting better service than us by a long... More

We'd had this suggested by a few people - locals, visitors and, of course, Trip Advisor. Don't be fooled by the less than exceptional neighbouring surroundings (lots of road works when we visited) and a not overly upmarket decor. We had a lovely welcome by Franck (Max) and the entire team in fact; You get the feeling it is a... More

We enjoyed this greatly, good value, cosy atmosphere, old style, traditional French cooking - no slick celebrity TV chefs here. The host, Frank, is a delight. Strong wine list, classic dining choices.

Four of us went and had a very enjoyable time. The staff are very welcoming and service throughout the evening was friendly, attentive and speedy. In terms of food, this is very traditional French cooking. Everything you would expect to see including a significant proportion of offal dishes – sweetbreads, liver, kidneys, pate etc. There are lighter alternatives so don’t... More

One of our dreams was to enjoy some real French cuisine. We spent 5 days in France and one of them was a day trip out to the Chalons-en-Champagne. Travelled by train from Paris (90 minutes). We rented a small VW Polo from AVIS (60euro including GPS) in and collected it from the station. First we visited the local tourist centre... More

We were a party of 6 visiting Chez Max for lunch and we had a great time! The cuisine is rustic French and the quality is good. The owner is really friendly with a great sense of humour. Two in our group choose the steak tartare, which seems to be a speciality and the owner prepares it at the table... More

Maybe not the most elaborate setting or presentation, but very tasty, friendly atmosphere and good value! Menu for 29€ with asparagus starter, sea bass for main course, cheese tray and a large selection of desserts + bottle of Alan Bernard (40€)!
