Turned up without a booking and I was surprised to be able to get in, because even in October I would expect this good quality bistro to be full. Despite English not really being spoken here (and yes I know its France), through our rusty...French and the staff doing their best to help us through a French only menu, we managed to work out what was on offer and ordered a great meal. The staff were very nice and compared to some Saint Malo tourist traps, the awful Cosa Nostra on Sillon for example, this place should be packed out. Thanks for a lovely meal on our last night in Brittany.More

Ate here last night on our last night in France. We wanted a French style restaurant - not too expensive and came across Le Bistro St Jean. Glad we did, great simple French cooking, friendly service and a nice environment. Limited menu but as I...have said many times before that is usually a good thing! Well done the boys that run it.More

Absolutely the best restaurant in the north of France. We ate here on our honeymoon and the whole experience was perfect. Food was the best we experienced all week and the local vibe is wonderful. Thankyou!

After organising over FB messenger we were so glad to make it for Lunch. After driving over 2 hrs to specially visit Le Bistro De Jean we were not disappointed! The owners and staff were very tentative and more than happy to help. Of course...the food was excellent! And of course the star of the show was the lovely golden retriever which was of course the barman/barlady!More

We went with high hopes of a recommendation but sadly this was not a great meal but it was expensive. The ambience is good but the menu promises more than it delivers. Langoustines were flavourless and wringing wet - you could literally squeeze the water...out of them so I imagine defrosted at 14euros. Nice profit. Main course veal was bland. Lamb shank was well cooked but the sauce was lacking and the potato undercooked. Cheese dessert - 3 very small pieces for 9.50 euros. Total cost 127 euros per couple. The wine was reasonably priced. There are much better places to visit.More

Walking round Saint Malo, we were not able to find a restaurant in the main dining streets and by luck ended up on Le Bistro de Jean's doorstep. They immediately arranged a table for us four and the pleasure began! From staff to food and...from drinks to atmosphere, the place was a winner. We had one of the best meals in a long time and a good laugh. (All tables seemed to be having the same good experience.) This establishment will remain a highlight in our Saint Malo excursion and is strongly recommended.More

Cons Delay for food was absurd. Food was good, albeit 2 hours late. No explanation given. Cramped. Pros Nice staff. Food was pretty good. But nothing is worth a 2 hr wait on small chairs.

A week ago my friend and I spent a night in the bustling town of Saint Malo intra murros and when we asked the hotel for restaurant recommendations they gave us a few names. I don't think we could have been luckier in our choice....Le bistro de Jean exceeded our expectations. The food was spot on.... I loved my "thon mi cuit" and the puddings were scrumptious. I would give the food 10/10 but what also scored highly was the atmosphere. The man (I don't know if that was Jean) was fun, kind and honest. it isn't often in a restaurant that the waiter tells you that a pichet of 50cl is too much for one person .... This was for my friend :) and he was right... Also if you were worried about COVID safety measures this was the first restaurant I went to in France which observed the rules and used only every other table which meant we felt really safe. I am recommending this restaurant without any hesitation.....To top it all it wasn't expensive! As I said ... a gem on many levels....More

Opened at 7.15pm for dinner, started filling up reasonably quickly, great service to start with , and continued all the way through the meal. Had the Moules to start with, but they were not in there shell, they had been peeled and put into a...lovely sauce with seasoning etc in a little oblong tin, the flavour was incredible. My friend had the "T" bone of veal, which he loved and I had the lamb shank, which was large, sumptuous and very filling, some green beens, a few mushrooms and a side of roast potatoes. Both desserts were extremely rich and chocolatey and was rounded of with a 12 year old Calvados, extremely wonderful meal!! Just over 50 euros each including a glass of fine red wine and a satisfying beer. Wonderful experience and would definitely go back again !!More

Sorry, you'll have to check with bistro. I've never been in November so don't know if they're open. They don't open lunchtime I'm pretty sure. I don't book myself - I just turn up when they first open: 7 to 7:30pm.
