We were out walking and wanted to stop for a hot drink (it was January). This is clearly a bar, where people were having drinks. However, we arrived just as they were setting the tables for lunch and we were refused drinks as a result. I might understand if they were preparing for a lunchtime onslaught but the place was almost empty. The funny thing is that we probably would have returned for lunch 45 minutes later if they had not been so rude. Instead we went elsewhere.

Deciding where to eat in Saint Jean de Luz is not easy as there is so much choice. Were so pleased to drive past Le Bar Basque and decide to give it a go just because there was a parking space outside and it looked pleasant enough. It turned out to be wonderful. The waiter was witty (we are English but do speak fluent French) and cheekily spoke to us in both as he served up truly delicious Sangria. Not the best ever but still delicious. We ate tapas as a starter. Very simple bits on bread but a meal in itself (one long plate between two). We then both at the pork in a delicious Basque pepper sauce (actually tasted sweet). The menu looked great but we live in La Rochelle and therefore didn't fancy any more fish so the pork was an easy choice. The Bar Basque is traditional and very cosy. Cool in summer and I would think warm in the winter. It really was lovely. The price was not an issue as we were going to eat in our extraordinarily expensive hotel restaurant but preferred something simple. Four glasses of Sangria and two courses each were 54 euros. A really pleasant experience. Will definitely go again despite the huge choice in Saint Jean de Luz

The choice is not very large but the food is very good and fresh. Children menu is perfect: home made fries and home made chicken nuggets!
We really enjoyed the place and the very kind service.

I have been here before and found the food to be fairly average. I stopped with family and friends and my kids today to have a coffee and look into the lunch menu. We we were left waiting so long we went somewhere else. The owner seemed so uninterested.. that when the kitchen opened he sat to have a lunch with his friend rather than come to take our order. As a resident in this town I will never come to this place again.

The staff only spoke french, the toilet area was creepy and not very clean.
The food was fairly good and they served it fast though.
Expect about 25€ per person

Recommended by a local we had a very enjoyable evening eating the local Iberico ham and various other delicious morsels as well as a variety of tasty desserts. Waiter lovely and so helpful and full of life and banter.

We were walking along the streets of Saint-Jean-De-Luz during the afternoon hours, and just wanted a drink and something light to eat. We also preferred outdoor seating as the weather was beautiful. However, many places were already closed. Luckily we found this place. We had a couple of glasses of wine and something light to eat out on the terrace. The best part of the experience was our young server. He was very patient and sweet, especially that we don't speak French nor Basque.

Charming (at least) bilingual service, excellent creme brulee, followed slightly small/simple boeuf straganoff - a few bits of meat of varying degrees of tenderness and 3 boiled potatoes. Beautiful to sit outside in the sun, albeit sharing crowded pavement with pedestrians and their dogs.

First visit to saint de Luz. We stopped for tapas here first which was excellent and great value, then came back for dinner as the ambience was perfect for us - a relaxed bar/restaurant. The gambas with garlic and whisky was amazing - soooo tasty (whisky and cream gave a taste almost like mild curry with a kick) and gambas so fresh and well cooked -well done to the chef. And the front of house guys were amazing in their speed of service and attention to detail. We watched as they meticulously cleaned down the Iberian ham slicer at the end of service - these guys really care. Go visit, you won't be disappointed.

Very nice friendly restaurant recommended by our host. Many places close on a chilly January night. Fairly basic inside and not too warm, but with a glass of wine inside it began to feel better. Good menu choices of meat and fish - I had delicious duck and my wife had salmon. Wine by the glass or bottle.
They do a special at €39 for two (3 courses and a bottle of wine) which is excellent value and the beef looked really nice.
Very happy with food and two waiting staff were very pleasant and efficient on quite a busy night.
Recommended.

We had a light lunch at the Bar Basque. Delicious tapas and a dessert. Both excellent, but the highlight was our waiter ,the charming Thierry. We only speak a little French, and Thierry's English isn't fluent ( although a lot better than our French! ) But he tried really hard to describe the items on the menu. We had great fun and will return next year to have dinner. Hope Thierry will still be there!

The salmon was the best we've ever had - slightly charred on one side, perfectly moist. Amazing! And the side dish of squash with a Parmesan topping was superb. The wait staff is super friendly and spoke some English. Try their MACCA'B cocktail - secret recipe. A wonderful experience we will never forget.

Attracted by the constant busyness of the pavement tables and interesting looking tapas every time we walked past , we went for an evening meal here and we were not disappointed . Diverse and interesting assiette de tapas followed by a shared delicious merluz ( hake) cooked in a spanish style - straight from the oven . Cooked to perfection . Excellent local rose wine as recommended but then we were too full to try the desserts which looked very mouth watering. Waiters were prompt , attentive and able to speak English when our French gave up. Very reasonably priced as on a street with other local restaurants but back from the busiest main resort eating streets. Many tables were reserved - an indication of local quality and value for money we felt .

As usual, I had the Kir Royale aperitif and G had 50cl Rose. We shared entrees - the plat du tapas (7 items) and the Serrano ham - both good. Main courses I had the brochette of lamb with red peppers and Espagnol red sauce and frites - good. G had the 5 large gambas a l'Ail served with rice. No desserts and the total bill was E72 +tip. A reasonable meal.

On a flying visit to the town this place was recommended by the proprieter of the hotel we were staying in. It was quiet when we arrived but we had been on the road all day and were eating a little early. Waiters very attentive and made some ood recommendations which we went along with and were not disappointed. Would defo return and eat here again.
