A reasonable 6 course tasting menu for dinner with excellent champagne and wine. We enjoyed some of the courses, particularly the plaice, the Guinea hen and the pudding. However, we found that a lot of the food was over-salted for our taste particularly as one of us has to have minimum dietary salt. The restaurant knew of this dietary requirement.... More

We had just returned from a very similar dining experience in Croatia and were doing s bit of a comparison. I liked the food very much at The French but my husband didn't. He thought it was far too over seasoned for his liking and trying to be something it wasn't. I personally loved it and the wine pairing too.... More

Eventually managed to eat at Simon Rogon's The French, all be it luncheon, due to the timing of my visits to Manchester. Only 3 tables in the restaurant being used so not the buzz of a normal busy establishment. However the food experience was excellent with artistry & flavour shining through. Not all dishes, I expect, from the tasting menu... More

This was our first visit to this restaurant, and it was worth the wait. The food, service and atmosphere were amazing. The staff were highly knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We will definitely be back

Overall: Food excellent, Wine match average, Location good/average, Service excellent, Value for Money average. My wife and I and parents dined here at lunchtime one Saturday in early July 2016. We each had the six course degustation and I had a wine match. The food was excellent. Beautifully presented and a delight to eat. Service was excellent also. The room... More

I have absolutely no idea why this restaurant doesn't have a Michelin star. I've been to many one star restaurants of a much inferior quality. Admittedly, L'Enclume, which is operated by the same Executive chef, is slightly better however I do not feel there is a 'two star gap'. Service and food is excellent as well as the overall experience.... More

We booked months in advance for a Saturday evening visit to The French, as we'd always wanted to visit. We were not disappointed - the service was impeccable, the dining room gorgeous (the two giant chandeliers make for a stunning focal point) and the food sublime. We went for the Portuguese full-bodied red (Beyra) which was delicious, and at a... More

Booked several months ahead for a special birthday celebration with the family. We convinced ourselves that we were missing out on an “experience” having never eaten somewhere like The French and had a taster menu. Others we know had (at various restaurants around the UK) and seemed to enjoy it, so we took the plunge, knowing we were going to... More

We had a very enjoyable lunch here, the service was excellent! The flavours, the colours, the presentation and the aroma of the food was 1st Class! The only thing that did not work for me in this restaurant is the colour of the uniform of the staff!

There was something of a sense of history to tonight’s dinner. It was the centenary of my great uncle’s death during the First World War and we were at the Midland – then a new hotel which would have been known to him but in the restaurant that would have been financially and socially out of reach to him. Since... More
