About
From wherever your are standing on the High Street in Kilkenny, a few minutes walk will get you to the most famous of all the slips, the Butterslip Lane and to Petronella, the city's most recently opened Restaurant-Cafe. Over four hundred years ago horse drawn carriages trundled down this thoroughfare. The charming slip with its pretty name is steeped in history and worn with footfall and remains so today. Duck under the archway and just on the right Petronella is becoming a regular for those who have discovered her. Guest Book entries already bear testament to culinary experiences from both near and far, the last entry from a diner from Seattle says 'as a chef I can truly recommend the cuisine

We visited as a family of 5, 3 adults + 2 children. We ordered from the Early Bird Menu which was priced at €29.95 for 3 courses. Frank the owner greeted us on arrival and brought us to our table on the 2nd floor of...the restaurant. The restaurant itself is very quaint and kept very clean. We had 2 lovely waitresses serving not only our table but the complete restaurant, they were on the ball and so friendly and organised. The food was unreal, every couse was so tasty and plentiful. Our youngest even enjoyed the Brie! We had booked for 6.30pm, no delays whatsoever, we were finished and paying the bill at 8pm. Tables were turned over very quickly, and understandable given the quality of food. Definitely give this place a visit if in Kilkenny. We'll certainly be back!More

The owner of Petronella, hidden in a narrow connecting alley aptly called Butterslip Lane, welcomed my party of six for reserved seating in an intimate second-floor room abuzz with conversation. The warm decor, original stone walls, and overhead oak beams dating pay homage to tales...of witches and scenes of medieval life. We learned about the restaurant's namesake, Petronella de Meath, the first woman in Europe burned at the stake for witchcraft. The early-bird dinner menu offered three-course meals. I enjoyed Ireland's ubiquitous starter - yummy soup with two-grain brown bread - followed by a main of baked chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella and spinach, and wrapped with parma ham, served on a bed of gnocchi in a cream pesto sauce. Delicious! We shared four homemade desserts, one was better than the other - lemon torte, death by chocolate, sticky toffee pudding, and cheesecake. Highly recommend!More

I had a lunch time visit while passing through Kilkenny. I happened upon this restaurant walking through butterslip lane I was seated upstairs, it was quaint, beautifully decorated and very clean. Service was prompt and very friendly. My server was a lady who knew the...menu very well. I ordered the lunch house special and wow .. the soup was absolutely amazing. Mushroom and garlic , so tasty. I had a toasted special , it came with a side of delicious home style chips and salad. I also had a coffee. Amazing value at €10.80 for everything The lunch special was only €8 I will definitely be backMore

Not sure everyone knows this, but restaurants close down early in Ireland and quickly turn into pubs. It's actually difficult to find a place to eat after 7 pm. This was our case in Kilkenny, and we accidentally turned to Petronella's for dinner. We were...so hungry...The owner was so gracious and fit us in when the restaurant was fully booked. Without knowing or looking at the reviews here I knew this place was something special and had to be highly reviewed. Turns out it is the number one rated restaurant in Kilkenny. And boy does it live up to it's reputation. The food was phenomenal. Dinner for 4, all different meals, all exquisite. But what makes this place outstanding is the owner and his wife. He takes the time to get to know his diners. He sits with you and explains the very interesting Petronella story. He explains the history of the building. He talks about the service and how much he and his wife care. I just don't have enough words for how much talking to him was such a big part of the experience on top of including the wonderful food. This I know for sure. When I return to Kilkenny (which hopefully will be soon), this is an experience I will book each time the opportunity comes available. My advice...make a reservation. They are busy almost every night, they are rated number 1 restaurant, and they are so so so yummy good.More

Petronella is a great place for both locals and tourists to visit. The food is always delicious, the portions are generous and there are some really interesting options on the menu for meat/fish eaters and vegetarians/vegans. The restaurant has kept it's cosy, historical decor and...it feels like you've been transported back in time. Staff are friendly and professional and Frank the owner is always so welcoming, accommodating and makes you feel at home. I would definitely recommend!More
