A group of six of us had dinner here last night. We researched a bunch of restaurants and reluctantly decided upon Iris. We ordered 3 bottles of wine over the course of the evening that were decently priced. Both kinds of mussels were exceptional and the prawns were spot on. My husband and I both had the sea bass and... More

This was our second visit to this lovely little restaurant and we enjoyed it just as much as the last time. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food is really good I had the duck breast and my husband had the pork with black pudding and both were delicious.

We went here for dinner and luckily squeezed in on a Saturday night. We all ordered different meals and ended up trying each other's because they were all so delicious. Between the fish, steak and duck we couldn't pinpoint the best - all so yummy! Repeat scenario for desserts. Definitely one to try.

Have visited this restaurant a number of times and have never been disappointed. Took my family there and was very well catered for. We ate off a fixed price menu which had a good choice and catered for all tastes. Good value for money and excellent food

Amazingly tasty food and really nice staff! The environment was calm and the staff had good knowledge on the food that was served. Perfect for a calm and quiet dinner in the evening.

This place offers nice quality food and is conveniently located on Thistle street. However, there is nothing special about the food. It is OK, but far too expensive and does not offer any "Scottish" experience which I was looking for (though the Haggis is pretty tasty).

Came here as a party of 7 - originally booked for 6 people but 7th added at short notice: despite being fully booked, the restaurant accommodated the change readily. Between us we chose a broad range of the dishes from steaks through fish to vegetarian. The vegetarian in our group was delighted at the imaginative dishes available - much better... More

Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
