This restaurant is very good. Fresh and modern. Lovely fresh ingredients prepared expertly without being heavy. I had the duck finished with a lovely berry and bourbon sauce. My husband had the pork loin stuffed with haggis....excellent, earthy and very Scottish. Our lovely Polish waitress was excellent. It was an extremely busy night and we were served in a timely... I have dined here on several occasions and have always had the pleasure of feeling I have had a very good French/Scottish style meal at a reasonable price for a central Edinburgh Restaurant.

There are so many good restaurants in Edinburgh that you are spoilt for choice and it is easy to stick with favourites. We decided to venture to somewhere new and were not disappointed. The food is amazing, well presented and is piping hot when served at the table. There is a good wine list and the service is friendly and... More

Iris is a lovely restaurant located in Edinburgh's Old Town, where we had our first meal in Scotland. It was delicious. I particularly liked the mussels and the duck. Others ordered a nicely prepared sea bass, scallops and some salads and a nice plate of potato/vegetable sides. This was also the place where we had our first (and best) taste... More

We had used TA to select the first restaurant of the trip but asked the driver for additional suggestions. Good choice. The three course was spectacular. The starter of mussels was right on the money. It came with bread and when the mussels were gone we needed more bread to soak up the broth that it was served in. The... More

Went here on TA advice for early dinner. Excellent food and service, very reasonably priced, and really good Prosecco!

At first you don't expect anything special. Because of a not special interior and the menu has classic dishes to wich they add a special feature. I didn 't expect a very good plate. But the taste of the mussels and of the ducks breast was just great. Nice staff as well.

Description
Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
