Great food and excellent service are the two thing I need to make myself and my family happy. On a holiday you always think whether we will get good food or not, but this place although small had limited choice, but the food was tasty and staff provided great service. Loved our little find.

What an amazing find! Limited choice menu and very little spare space, but everything's fresh, hot and tasty - served with joy by people who are clearly happy in their own skin. And unbelievably cheap - no corkage charge for BYO. and none for the big smiles all round. It was a delight to eat there and I'd happily travel... More

We were looking for an Indian buffet on a Sunday afternoon and saw some positive reviews for the Red Fort. The reviews were not wrong. The food was tasty and although the selection was limited the quality was pretty good. The price was excellent and the food was fresh. I will certainly go back.

Best to come before 7 while its quiet and easy to get a table especially on a weekend summer evening. Service is always friendly and helpful, although it can get really busy. The food is good and authentic and a reasonable portion. Really good naan breads. One benefit is that it is a BYOB and they do not charge any... More

After having failed to get a table at several other Indian restaurants nearby, a friend and I decided to give Red Fort a try. There were plenty of tables available, the manager sat us immediately and was so polite the whole time. The interior is quite cosy and I definitely did not get the impression that it is "run down",... More

We shared the meal with a group of friends to start with and very enjoyable BUT sadly mid way through the start/main arrival a group (large) of students arrive with arms full of beers Etc! Sadly then we had to rush the rest as the noise was overwhelming. One family group left before arrival of their starters. BUT inexpensive and... More

The principle of byob is great. I went with a large group of people (there were 15 of us) and I have a very restricted diet (for health reasons) and just wanted to order and side. However I was forced to order a full meal that I did not and could not eat. It was very disappointing as I had... More

We visit Edinburgh often and there are so many restaurants to try we sometimes find we neglect old favourites as we had with The Red Fort until our recent trip last month. We arrived on a cold Sunday night, bottle of chilled wine from Tesco round the corner in hand and were warmly welcomed. We were disappointed to find we... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighborhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
