Decided to stop in here for lunch just as it was starting to rain. Service was a little slow but ok. Food was wonderful. Fresh homemade pita bread with hummus, great grilled kebabs, excellent shwarma. Would definitely go back.

This Middle eastern restaurant is set over several floors and has 2 entrances - the main one on Johnston Terrace and a lower Entrance from the pedestrian walkway accessed from Victoria Street. It can get quiet busy so it's advisable to reserve a table, especially if going for an evening meal. It's worth noting that, while wine and beer are... More

We stopped for lunch at Hanam's outdoor terrace, overlooking Grassmarket, and found to food to be excellent. The Fatoush salad was excellent. My wife said that the hummus was the best she had tasted in years. The lamb in my Gormeh Sabzi was very tender and succulent. All around, excellent food. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options on... More

While visiting Edinburgh during the Festival we spotted Hanam's and decided to try for a table without booking (not always easy in Edinburgh in August). Fortunately we needed an early dinner and they managed to fit us in. We were so glad they did! The food was delicious from start to finish. Flavoursome, simply cooked and completely moreish. The bread... More

We visited Hanam's for a meal with our teenage daughters before the Edinburgh Tattoo. You can't book but we were seated no problem at about 6.30 pm. We had 3 courses - we shared hummus/naan and halloumi cheese, then had mixed kebabs followed by baklava and mango sorbet. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent. We knew before we... We were staying nearby and looking for a low-key and different restaurant to try. I thought the food was really good and I've eaten at many Lebanese/Turkish restaurants in the US and Europe. The food here is similar to those familiar with these types of restaurants. I thought the stew I had was flavorful and the lamb had clearly been... More

You can't pre-book but we were lucky and walked in off the street. The service from the minute we walked was stellar, attentive but not overly so and our waitress was able to suggest dishes that we might like. It had a great atmosphere with a real mix of folk. We ordered baba ganoush, deep fried bread and halloumi. All... More

We didnt get a chace to eat a full meal here, but the hummus and naan were terrific. Its just at the base of the Castle complex right off High St. So its a good place to stop either before or after you tour the Castle.

Set in the heart of Edinburgh is Hanam's Kurdish and Middle Eastern Restaurant and if you think that's a mouthful, wait until you see what on offer! Voted one of Britain's Top 5 Middle Eastern Restaurants by the Telegraph, owner Ahmed ensures the personal touch, by being there seven days a week to offer advice and banter. The menu offers starters such as falafel and baba ghanoush, main courses that include Kurdish pizzas, vegetarian casseroles and halal meat dishes, such as Kurdish-style lamb biryani. There are also a selection of shish kebabs and desserts. Three courses from this banquet-like menu will cost an average of just £20 per person. And, if you're so inclined, you can even smoke a traditional hookah after your meal.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
