There is a limited menu, but every dish is well presented and tastes delightful. Portions are a little small but I did not look for a chippy afterwards!! Prices are reasonable and staff are very attentive Worth a visit

We had booked in advance based on a recommendation and were not disappointed. We were seated quickly however the front of house was a little bit abrupt. The food took a little while to arrive, the restaurant was full, but most importantly it was amazing! The skewers and the lamb with mint & pomegranate were divine! The waitress worked tirelessly... Had dinner at the Outsider while in Edinburgh. The menu offers a variety of different main courses, so there is something for everyone. I was told about this place from friends, who had gone there. It was excellent. The food was flavorful and prepared with care. We all enjoyed our meals. The Chunky Healthy Line, aka skewered meat and vegetables,... More

We were visiting Edinburgh and meeting friends for dinner. They had eaten here once before and wanted to go back. Reservations were a must. The location is great, very near the Royal Mile on George IV Bridge. We were welcomed and our coats were stored for us. There are Windows that face Edinburgh Castle. So spectacular and even better after... More

My husband and I came to this restaurant based on a local shopkeepers recommendation. It was delicious. We had great service in a beautiful little spot overlooking the castle. The place was quiet when we arrived about 630 but was packed an hour later. We had no reservation but as it was a Wednesday night I believe we lucked out.... More

Went with 2 quite elderly friends. Tables were very close together and accoustics made it hard to carry on a conversation. Venison was tough and vegetable skewer messy and undercooked. Desserts were much less exciting than menu promised. I think this is the sister restaurant of The Apartment which we visited last week and found the food excellent.

Had an hour for lunch and dived in here as the specials looked good on the chalk board out front. Venison on rarebit toast with wild mushrooms and hollandaise - £6.70? In London you could add a '1' to the start of that, so I ordered two on the same plate, as it was so cheap. Blown away by how... More

In short: I've had much friendlier, efficient and welcoming service in my local chippy. We booked this restaurant for our friend's birthday and if it hadn't been for our friend requesting to go here we would have taken our custom elsewhere. It took my partner several attempts to get through to the restaurant by phone to book a table and... More

We stopped by on recommendation of friends on a beautiful Saturday evening. They were booked full. The host (manager, other) squeezed us in asking only if we could finish within 2 hrs. That said, we ordered an excellent bottle of wine (all under 30 GBP), olives, bread and watched the sun (start to) set over the city. Our dinners were... More

During that time in Edinburgh when the Tattoo and numerous festivals and craft fairs were taking place it was difficult to obtain reservations in better quality restaurants. Our hotel staff recommended the Outsider but when they called for reservations there was nothing available until after 9:00 pm. The restaurant did suggest that tables were available at 6 pm, which was... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
