We stopped in on a late afternoon during Hogmanay, seeking a cozy warm place to just have a glass of wine and an appetizer. The staff was welcoming and we had a lovely time taking a break from the chaos! Wish we had had a chance to go back for dinner - the menu looked delicious!

This is amongst my favourite places to come and eat in Edinburgh, I would really recommend it. I have been 3 times, and have left very impressed and satisfied on each occasion. It's a lovely menu, full of fresh, good quality ingredients put together with flair and understanding. The potted crab is delicious, fresh and well seasoned. The melanzana parmigianna... More

We've come here many times and enjoyed it, but this is the first time we've found it hard to hear each other over the loud, intrusive music. The answer to the request to turn it down was 'I'll try'! The task clearly defeated the waiter, most of whose time was spent turning folk away even thought there were empty tables... More

We were recommended the mulled wine in this establishment, so went in and asked for a glass which they brought us to our seats outside. The mulled wine was delicious, the best we tasted in Edinburgh.

Not so sure about the cuisine however the manner in which we were greeted was as if staff could not be bothered. We arrived at the front door to find a waitress clearing chairs from outside the frontage. She made no comment to say that they were closing. It was around 8pm. We went in and a blackboard indicated we... More

We ate here our first night in Edinburgh. Wonderful staff and food. The fish was fresh and well prepared. Very small restaurant that can fill up quickly. Reservations are good but not required in off season.

Arrived just before 9pm on Friday night. Only 2 tables occupied. Was met by a waitress who looked as if 2 muggers had just walked in. Immediately said that the kitchen was closed. I said I only wanted drinks, so she reluctantly said that I could sit at the bar. As the place was nearly empty, I asked to sit... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal here. The service was attentive and the food very good. It's certainly worth stopping by for a bite to eat. It's cozy and comfortable. Next time we go to Edinburgh we'll stop in here.

We happened upon this restaurant by chance. It's an intimate restaurant/bar with an atmosphere that suited a winter walk in Edinburgh....nice low lighting, dark wood panelling, moody jazz. The menu is reassuringly small & the wine list very extensive. The food & wine were both excellent (& very fairly priced).

We served the finest, freshest local seafood along side some of the best wines the planet has to offer. As well as food & wine, the restaurant is famous for its ambience, atmosphere and warm welcome and our love of food is only matched by our love of music. Blues, jazz folk, wherever the mood take us. Trains have been missed & plans have been changed as people who come in for a quick glass of wine often end up spending the rest of the night with us. Forget where your going at Ecco Vino. Ching-Ching!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
