We happened upon this restaurant by chance. It's an intimate restaurant/bar with an atmosphere that suited a winter walk in Edinburgh....nice low lighting, dark wood panelling, moody jazz. The menu is reassuringly small & the wine list very extensive. The food & wine were both excellent (& very fairly priced).

If you are staying in Edimburgh take your time to eat at this place: nice, cosy and warm. A large wine selection, the meat and fish based courses were superb. Strongly recommend the pork belly and the mussles

We arrived when it was quiet and offered a table for two hours directly in front of another couple. We asked to move tables into a more unobtrusive place and settled in a corner table. The waitress was very blunt on arrival and took a long time to serve us whilst being attentive to another couple on the next table.... More

We popped in to Ecco Vino for lunch, at first we were a bit taken aback by the waitress' abruptness whether we wanted food and drink, and we could only have the table 2 hours, We were seated and soon served, the food And drink came which we enjoyed a platter to share which was nice, and the wine was... It started with mulled wine but we ended up staying for several hours having more wine, some cold cuts and cheese as well as a risotto and ravioli. Nice atmosphere and fun to just sit and watch people come and go. The staff was friendly and I would recommend either to go here just for drinks or even for dinner.

Called in to have a hot mulled wine and a sit in the warm for a chat. Didn't have food but it looked lovely what others were having. Staff were very friendly and mulled wine was nice but not best I've had.

I've never eaten here, but the food looks delicious and I am in awe at how they prepare such lovely looking food in such a small kitchen. My partner and I have been a couple of times and love the ambience. It's a snug little place and is great for a cosy drink.

Exceptional service with excellent wine recommendations, tailored to food choices - couldn't quite decide between two so offered that we tasted them both. Wine was spot on and lovely atmosphere. Shared a very generously sized starter portion of mussels which was delicious. Both had pork belly for the main, served with black pudding, roast potatoes and a red wine jus.... More

Wanted something to eat and drink mid afternoon just off the Royal Mile. Ecco had that look that said quality. Walked in, sat down and ordered food and drink (lots of wine options). Food was delish' pork belly with black pudding and roast potatoes. My wife had the mussels. We had bread and olives to start (large portion). If you're... More

We served the finest, freshest local seafood along side some of the best wines the planet has to offer. As well as food & wine, the restaurant is famous for its ambience, atmosphere and warm welcome and our love of food is only matched by our love of music. Blues, jazz folk, wherever the mood take us. Trains have been missed & plans have been changed as people who come in for a quick glass of wine often end up spending the rest of the night with us. Forget where your going at Ecco Vino. Ching-Ching!

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
