The food was very tasty and we enjoyed the Tandoori Chicken, Lamb Roganjosh and Chicken Vindaloo with Pilaf Rice and Lentils. All was very tasty and reasonably well priced however I thought that .95p for a single papadam was the only thing that created a bad taste when you can buy a packet of 24 papadums for the same price.... Awesome Indian food, even late at night. We were by far their last table for the night, but still finished up before their closing time. The service was lacking, though. I've never heard so many "thank yous" in a single exchange before. One for every item he placed on the table (7). It made me uncomfortable and undermines the sincerity... More

Genuine, authentic and simply very very tasty. After a busy long day at the office on Friday we needed somewhere to eat and seeing as Zest was across the road seemed ideal. From the outside looks nothing special, and not the biggest restaurant when walking through the door but this was where it ended. The service was polite and very... More

We visited around 6:30 on a Sunday in June. We were seated right away. The service was very professional. There was background music which was very nice. The décor was minimalist compared to most Indian restaurants we have been to and although it was nice you didn't get that cozy feeling. We started with pompadons and chutneys and the chutneys... Used our Tastecard to get 2 for 1 on starters and main courses (doesn't include side dishes, rice or breads) on a Friday night. Restaurant filled up by 8 pm. Poppadoms and pickle tray followed by king prawn and puri and assorted kebabs. All absolutely gorgeous and nicely presented. Main courses opted for Sir Walter Scott lamb and Naga chicken... More

We went here late on Sunday evening and were given a warm friendly welcome. The restaurant was quiet but this is more likely to do with location. There is a brilliant comedy club next door that allows you to plan a great night out. The staff were exceptionally friendly and keen to serve up food to our individual requirements. The... More

Lots of people I know rate this place, so decided to see what the fuss was about. Have to say it was a pleasant experience with two very tasty meals - a king prawn massala and a very spicy garlic chili chicken. Washed down with a great bottle of Reisling, we also had naan breads and poppadoms with the obligatory... More

We were visiting Edinburgh from Oxford and were staying at Indigo Hotel. We walked out to have dinner and we spotted this restaurant not far away from Indigo by coincidence but we viewed the TripAdvisor reviews at the door as we don't have time for trail! We love Indian food and we have been to many authentic Indian restaurants in... More

I wanted to have some Indian and so I went to Zest. The food was amazing I have to say, had a mixed kebab starter, some popadoms and also had the P927 Special with rice and naan bread. I was impressed, the food didn't take too long, I enjoyed all the food and would easily go for seconds. I would... More

Not your usual Bangladeshi Indian restaurant, Zest is smart and modern with a terrific menu combining classic and inventive dishes. The decor in this bright, airy, centre-of-town shopfront is clean and open, with white walls, blond chairs, contemporary styling. The menu includes dishes like starter of Zest's own tandoori trout, main course of medium-spicy Jaipuri chicken with fried mushrooms, onions and capsicums with Punjabi masala in thick sauce. Peshwari naan and bhajis are excellent. The service is hip and friendly and the wine list well matched to the flavours. And yes, there is chicken tikka masala, if you must, but this is a great place for exploring new flavours.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
