The type of punter frequenting this place could seriously put you off your food. It may have been the place to be seen some years back, but there are few redeeming features now. The aggressive looks because you have dared to sit down to save a table for a toddler and mother (who are queuing to choose their food), are... More

I have never been in Edinburgh and not eaten at Henderson’s. The city is extremely fortunate to have this great place. But is it resting on its laurels—Edinburgh is (virtually unique?) in having great vegetarian alternatives. Ate here with friends: the three of us had the three main courses on offer—vegetarian haggis and mash; vegetable lasagne; chick pea and cauliflower... More

Decided to go for lunch after my wife had suggested it. Went on a Saturday lunchtime, so as expected it was very busy, which although sometimes frustrating is generally a good sign. Although a meat-eater, I do like vegetarian dishes, but I'm probably not fat enough down the veggie path to truly appreciate the diversity of the menu. Downside was... More

We were recommended this vegetarian and vegan restaurant by our B&B hosts at 14 Hart Street and were not disappointed. We had no reservation but - luckily for us - Hendersons suspended its reservations policy during the period of the Edinburgh Festival. Good food and plenty of it, served in a counter/buffet style. Plenty of options for the main course... More

I have been calling in at Hendersons Vegetarian Restaurant for about 40 years and always loved their food and ambiance. This time was different however: although my soup was tasty, of somewhat spicey, the three salads were horrid - the beetroot was dressed with something which made it inedible and the Waldorf was made with only celery instead of including... Love the food and the convenience of this restaurant and there's always a good range of freshly made food but it definitely seems more prices than previously and this put us off returning when it doesn't cost that much more to have a sit down meal at David banns

We travelled from Hexham to Edinburgh, just for the day as husband had a meeting in Edinburgh. I've been wanting to go to Henderson's for a while - previously lived in Glasgow and had heard very good things about it. So me and the kids want for lunch. There was pizza, quiche, baked potato and a curry (how unimaginative) and... More

I have never had such rude service before, especially in Edinburgh. All the food is microwaved, and when I realised they'd put the filo pastry through the microwave, making it soggy and unappetising, I asked for it to be exchanged for a cold one. The waitress got very aggressive, asking me why I wanted to throw away and waste food,... More

My wife and I have been eating at Henderson's on and off for more than 30 years, but I doubt we shall again. The food has been disappointing the last couple of times, but this time it was simply inedible. The pasta salad was swimming in oil, the beetroot salad and rice salad were drowned in soy sauce - all... More

Established in 1963, Scotland's first vegetarian restaurant "The Salad Table" is still proudly serving fresh, wholesome and tasty food. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or visit our deli shop for some takeaway and a loaf from our onsite organic bakery. Our restaurant is set up cafeteria style, offering a relaxed and informal dining experience, featuring live music every night, it's perfect for families, young and old, and still run as Janet Henderson envisioned 53 years ago.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
