My husband and I had been to Hendersons before, whilst staying in Edinburgh a few years ago and were keen to sample the vegetarian food again. The atmosphere upon entering was cold. No one greeted, smiled or stopped their texting! We selected a table to put down our coats and bags and were shouted at that it was counter service... More

Comfortably catered for 8 of us and a baby. It was not possible to book online before 5.00pm so we had to phone. The vegetarian lasagne was creamy and comforting. There was a great range of 7-8 salads. I had a selection of 4 as a main course and they were all delicious. Don't miss out on the complimentary dressings... More

I buy lunch here several times per week for years, food usually tastes quite good but is always way more expensive that others locally. As of today, they gave me a portion size substantially smaller than every single time I've ever been, burger and 3 salad deal, only to be told, seriously, that it's the same size. I mentioned it... Friendly and helpful staff with a variety of salads available that should suit everyone. Great cakes/puds/drinks available. An easy and comfortable atmosphere not far away from Princes Street.

Good selection of vegetarian and vegan food, decent portions, some nights there is a gentleman playing the piano, nice old tunes :-)

We'd read about Henderson and even though I'm not vegetarian I don't eat a lot of meat, so to find a restaurant that doesn't serve meat is great. My husband opted for the vegan pizza with pasta salad, which he really enjoyed, whilst I had the squash & red lentil soup with iomemdze oatcakes, which were delicious followed by vegan... More

First visit and my last! Ugh - sticky tables, flatware in big bins with everyone touching it, dirty walls, no decor and appalling, bland food. A huge disappointment :(

This is a restaurant I've known since it opened! Over those years it has only rarely disappointed. There is a good choice of dishes ranging from tempting salads to hot food. I had a platter of four salads, which I enjoyed. A slight disappointment was that one of my favourites was not available that day. The food had plenty of... More

One of a handful of vegatarian restaurants in Edinburgh, the Central location , simple cozy atmosphere and imaginative good fare make it a Mecca for the vegetarians.

Some of the food was nice but the portion control wasn't great. I had roasted stuffed tomatoes and the side garnish of coleslaw was huge! The vegetarian haggis was ok but it was smothered in pepper, there was far too much of it and the spinach was massively over salted. While we were there, there was a piano and trumpet... More

Established in 1963, Scotland's first vegetarian restaurant "The Salad Table" is still proudly serving fresh, wholesome and tasty food. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or visit our deli shop for some takeaway and a loaf from our onsite organic bakery. Our restaurant is set up cafeteria style, offering a relaxed and informal dining experience, featuring live music every night, it's perfect for families, young and old, and still run as Janet Henderson envisioned 53 years ago.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
