Visited for brunch recently and had a great meal. The food was delicious - especially the vegetarian haggis, which was easily equal to its meat-based cousin! The service was fairly slow despite the café not being that busy but we weren't in a rush, the staff were very polite and I got the impression that they would be happy to... More

Henderson's can always be relied upon to provide really amazing salads and soups. I ended up having lunch here 3 days running!

OK, I did a three day stay in Edinburgh. I went to Hendersons for a linner on 9th February. As it was my birthday day and I am on a plant based diet I wanted to treat myself. I have to say the place looked nice, the food looked nice too but the lady who served me probably did not... More

Went in for 1 veggie breakfast and some sour dough, gentleman comes up to then advise it's going to be at least 40+ mins as an order for 20 breakfasts has just been put in! Really! How about making the single breakfast first perhaps... Won't we visiting again.

For the price we expected higher quality food :-(. Generally overlooked and bland. We Won't be returning. On a positive note the service and atmosphere were good

Phantastic choice of delicious meals, gorgeous recipies, lots of them glutenfree! I was absolutely delighted from this "ecologic cooking"! Brilliant Quality! Convincing choice of soups, different meals, salads etc.! I tried also the Henderson´s at Holyroad, which is much smaller and might not have as much ambiance, but I found the quality of my lunch was also very good! I... More

We are upstairs in the casual restaurant. Yummy vegetarian food. We had a wholesome soup which they were not shy with the chilli - lovely and warming on a wet Edinburgh day. I bought their sour dough bread - scrummy - sad when it was finished I'll definitely return on my next visit to Edinburgh.

This place is way past it's prime. Stale and dry pastries and scones. Greasy breakfast pancakes. Service is good but I won't be returning.

Hendersons is an institution, a staple in every Edinburgh trip over the years. It hasn't got old in terms of food quality, although when I visited it did feel slightly tired in terms of the vibe of the place. Although having said that, it was off-peak hours so perhaps everyone was a bit tired? But still good healthy vegan/veg food.

Just of the main shopping drag is an off shoot of the famous Henderson's. Famous for being first vegetarian cafe, and then they published cookery books. My expectations are high. They have a lunch deal hot thing( burger, spinacopia, pakora, haggis wrap etc) with 2 salads for £7.50. Good portions. Lunch appetising, fresh, with distinct flavours plus a seat. Bit... More

Description
Established in 1963, Scotland's first vegetarian restaurant "The Salad Table" is still proudly serving fresh, wholesome and tasty food. Join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or visit our deli shop for some takeaway and a loaf from our onsite organic bakery. Our restaurant is set up cafeteria style, offering a relaxed and informal dining experience, featuring live music every night, it's perfect for families, young and old, and still run as Janet Henderson envisioned 53 years ago.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
