I was very surprised during our visit to this once iconic inn yesterday. Cash only, no dogs, no mobiles, can only serve one table at a time, no children except in separate room. Almost unbelievable experience in a local pub. Sadly, I can’t see how this place can be successful. Not able to order food as only one “slot” every 20 mins so unable to comment on the quality or choice of the food. Drank our coffees quickly and left.

Hadn't been here for a while & probably won't be back. Had a meal which was very nice. Quite a few things from the menu weren't available - including the Sunday roast. Poor soft drinks selection. The problem is the atmosphere. The lady who seemed to be in charge would benefit from some customer service training, especially with tourists. There was quite a few French visitors (the rugby had been on the day before) but we were embarrassed at how unwelcoming the staff seemed to be to them. A group of 4 or 5 who came in about a minute after us were told they couldn't have food without a reservation. We weren't told that. Another table of French people was shouted at for daring to look at their bagpipe video on their phone. It did not give a warm impression of Scotland which is very disappointing. We left with the feeling only locals are welcome there.

Dear Customer I would like to apologise for your experience not being to the standard that we aim to achieve at all times at The Cramond. On this occasion we were under staffed, and the pub can seat 130 people. We had a few large bookings and only 1 person in the kitchen on this Sunday, so we welcomed as many walk in customers as we could and would stop orders to honour our bookings, to not overwhelm the kitchen. We want our food to come out the best quality as possible and this is not achievable when overloaded with too many orders at one time. The customers we could not accommodate was purely down to timing and numbers, nothing to do with being local or visitors. Our team members may not have had the chance to explain this to everyone arriving as their role is fast paced with the high demand on a weekend. Our digital detox rule is part of the Samuel Smith Brewery chain and we do our best to enforce this politely and kindly, but understand it does not suit everyone. I hope to welcome you back at the Cramond Inn in the future. Kind Regards Kerera

The inn itself is as attractive as ever. We had no problem with their anti digital policy. However, the food offering was overpriced and underwhelming. The only drinks were their own brand versions and not very satisfactory. As very long term customers from when the Cramond Inn was very popular we were very disappointed. Had hoped it was back up to standard. It wasn't.

The Cramond Inn is a lovely place to have lunch after a walk along the beach road there are two lovely rooms both with roaring fires and a friendly welcome. The menu is varied and well priced, we were having lunch so went for the sandwiches. For me the cheese and pickle and my husband had the chicken goujon, both came with chips and small salad and both were very tasty. Will certainly be back to have dinner or maybe Sunday lunch

Did not know what to expect after reading the reviews but was pleasantly surprised. Had Sunday beef roast was all fresh and the beef was tender and very tasty. Had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream again as good as you would get anywhere. Tried one of their ales which again was certainly acceptable and would easily get a taste for. Cannot complain at the cost the staff were very friendly and helpful at with the real fires on it was very homely. The no mobile rule and cash only I was was fully aware of so was not an issue. I would definitely go back if I was in the area again.

Stopped off here in the middle of our walk last night after having not been in years. Really welcoming atmosphere they are clearly taking Covid very seriously but are still doing lots to make you feel at home. 2 Taddys and a wine arrived at the table ice-cold which were very refreshing. We were tucked away in a quiet corner with lots of old maps of the area. Guy behind the bar was really friendly and was very informative about the menus, we will come back to eat next time as the food on the other tables looked delicious!

Went in with my elderly parents for a quick drink. £5.30 for two (half pints) glasses of soda and lime. After the drinks had been served, I was told they don't have soda water on tap so only had expensive bottles of soda by very indignant staff member, who looked like she'd had enough of the place herself. My 78 year old father was rather assertively informed from behind the bar that he wasn't allowed to use his phone when he was spotted reading a text message (not even phoning someone). It almost ruined what was an other wise pleasant day out with my parents. No dogs, No cards, No wifi, No phones: makes for a very negative atmosphere. It takes effort to make a place so unwelcoming and non-inclusive. I don't blame the staff, they seemed fed up too. Clearly a management/policy issue. This may be a business decision by the management to put tourists/passers by off so they can cater for only locals who want a certain kind of atmosphere. If so, that's fine and I wish them well. Business must be good if they can afford to have such exclusive policies. But just be aware you need to sign up to their 'philosophy' before you enter. Not for me sadly.

Went to this pub as it was one of the only places serving food near the beach. Felt very unwelcomed on arrival. The waiter was clearly stressed (despite only serving three tables.) We actually felt bad for ordering food. Was told to wait twenty minutes for a "slot" to even place our order as they didn't want to "overwhelm the kitchen." Food was basic but fine. The cash only policy is ridiculous given the distance to the nearest ATM. Observed the waiter telling a woman sitting by herself in the corner to put her phone away. I understand asking people not to use their phones in groups but she was just trying to distract herself while her friends went to get money out. Policy needs to change.

Having supported this pub for over 20 years even when they were updating it and nobody else was giving them any custom they have now decided in their wisdom to not allow dogs. This is a stupid arrangement due to the fact that many of us dog walkers would go there because of the location. You have lost a lot of customers most of which were locals. Don't you realise that most pubs allow dogs at least somewhere on the premises. Very disappointing.

It is disappointing for dog walkers that the company has introduce the "No Dog" policy in all of their houses that serve food. We have had a mixed review on this, obviously, dog walkers are not happy but we have had many of our customers stating that they are happy as they did not want to eat here due to the dogs. Plus many families have now joined us stating they did not feel their children were safe around all the dogs? We do have a lovely patio area and a beautiful beer garden with gorgeous views over the river; where dogs are most welcome. We are so so sorry for any convenience caused and we would like to thank you for taking the time to give us a review.

Charged £10 for a pint of fresh orange and lemonade plus a soda water. If I had realised before I paid would have told them to keep them. Soda water very chlorinated with few bubbles. When queried told that was the price the owners had set.. I had the hunters chicken which was very poor. Chicken over microwaved , tough, and even hard in places. Did not taste good either. Luckily had some cash as that was only form of payment accepted-strange !! Very disappointed and unfortunately have no plans to return any time soon

We are so sorry to hear that you found your meal unsatisfactory. We do agree that the little bit you left was tough, we just wish you had informed us earlier that there was a problem so that could of dealt with it. We are extremely sorry. On a positive, we are so happy that your companion enjoyed their meal and that you enjoyed our ice-cream dessert. Thank you so much for your feedback as it is very important to us.

A pleasant quiet drink after a winter evening walk. The pub is clean, comfy, well lit with log fires. A friendly welcome from Willie, one of the new managers. I am someone who left extremely negative reviews in the past. I urged Sam Smiths to sell the pub. But it resumes business under Sam Smiths and if you visit, you do need to understand that Humphrey Smith makes the rules and the local management have no control over the extremely restrictive policies. So why 4 stars? Well, I am being generous because it is clear that the new management are giving it their best shot. As a real ale drinker and CAMRA member, I would dearly love my local to serve real ale, even a single tap offering a Sam Smiths bitter would be brilliant. Willie explained that this could only be viable if there was sufficient demand. The pub needs to be a lot busier and with beer drinkers and then it could be suggested to Humphrey Smith that a barrel of real ale be delivered to the Cramond Inn. So, here's hoping! Leave your dog, leave your mobile, bring cash and have a beer - and ask for real ale to be offered in the future!

The Cramond Inn has re-opened after a 6 month closure under the stewardship of Chris and Kerera. They have done a wonderful job, keeping the Sam Smith beers and providing a warm and friendly atmosphere. The food menu is fairly modest but reasonably priced and of very good quality. On a chill November day the warming log fire, quiet coziness and absence of mobile phones and laptops made our day. So ignore all those old poor reviews and get yourself down there, plenty of free parking and the cheapest and best pint we have ever paid for: £2.80 for Sam Smiths Best : beat that !

Cramond needs a pub, and so I went along to support a local business. My husband had visited before and he was disappointed, primarily at the lack of atmosphere and choice of beers. I wanted to check it out myself, thinking that it’ll still be a nice place for a wine. The building and location mean that there is sooo much potential! The staff seemed lovely, but it’s clear their hands are tied by the brewery. All the walls were painted brown, along with the beans. It looked so bad! It could be such a cute cosy old fashioned bar, but the brown is terrible. The main bar itself was nice and clean. There was no atmosphere. People seemed scared to talk! An older lady sitting close by checked her phone briefly…she was actually asked to stop by staff due to their digital detox policy. I checked the menu - wow, that is expensive considering they don’t have a professional chef. To put into context, their fish and chips is a similar price for what you’d pay at Tom Kitchin’s restaurant (and he is mitchelin star). The menu even states the fish is frozen. I’m guessing the food is generally prepared elsewhere and put together on site (I may be wrong). I ordered a sandwich, as I couldn’t justify paying for a meal. £7.50 for a sandwich and a bit of salad. I’m sorry, but it wasn’t great. I heard the people on the next table whisper about what they were going to pick…one said, you had the chilli last time and it wasn’t good. I didn’t say my sandwich was bad or send it back. Maybe I should have, but I didn’t want to make a scene. I’m sorry, I don’t want to put a downer on a place that the community needs, and the staff did seem nice. I just can’t see how it’s going to work unless there are some big changes. This place could be utterly amazing!

The food was awful, overpriced and made us ill. We phoned to speak to the manager and they reluctantly offered a refund. When we returned we were pulled into a side room where the manager/chef was so rude to us, even though we had been completely pleasant and it was their fault in the first place. He told us the food was all frozen - £14 for a tiny steak pie that isn’t even homemade!! Such a shame as this place could be so nice. Will not be returning based on the managers rudeness! 2 female bar staff were lovely however.

Dear, CC. We don't respond to reviews but felt we had to on this case! The food you ordered was fully eaten, and the waitress checked twice with you at the table, how the meal was? No complaint was made. The camera’s show you eating the full meals, and no other customers had any issues. The phone call you mention, was rude, threatening and unacceptable to my partner Chris. No staff member should take any abuse over the phone or face to face. Chris was in shock from the aggressiveness of the call, he gave a refund when you returned. He took you aside to the snug bar, not a room & was quite within his right to defend himself from the disgraceful phone call. The menu is structured, that the brewery provide so we have no control over the menu design. So, from my view, you and your mother had a virus or bug and put all the rest of the customers and staff at risk by coming into the pub after being poorly. You mentioning that you are not returning is great, as you would be barred for the abusive phone call. Thanks Kerera

Terrible experience. Looked online and was recommended as a dog friendly pub. Arrived and were not allowed in and also they only take cash in a location which arguably has the least ATMs. Way too many barriers to spending money and this was evident in the 5% occupancy of the place.

You initially enquired through our fb page about booking a table to dine. Our fb page does state that dogs are not allowed inside the building where food is being served; but they are more than welcome on out beautiful terrace. We are not sure where online you found your information, as you would agree we do not have control over what is published online. When you telephoned to book a table to eat it was explained to you that we are cash only and this was perfectly fine for you. Your terrible experience, we presume, was because your dog could not enter our restaurant. We are so sorry that we offended you and your pet; hopefully you will give our Terrace a try next time, were we will provide fresh water and a cuddle for your dog 🐶
