Quite on spec we went to Asti who offered us a nice table in the front room where there was plenty of elbow room and plenty of activity from staff and clients, but not enough noise to prevent two 60+ year olds sustaining a lively conversation. The welcome, indeed the service throughout from four separate members of the team was... More

Fantastic food especially considering the price. I've paid more for a scabby Premier Inn burger!! Great service, really pleasant and a nice cosy atmosphere. Cannot recommend highly enough. Even left a tip.....and I'm from Yorkshire!!

We chanced upon this lovely restaurant whilst on a short stay to Edinburgh. Great food and marvellous staff. Good wine, too. Sorry Eric - we know it's your favourite and don't want to be crowded out, but we're sure you won't really mind us sharing this with other visitors!!

A short walk from our hotel, we were happy with our dinner at Asti Cucina. We had the Lamp Chop special and the Eggplant Parmesan (dinner size). Food was very good. Our wine selections were both mediocre (Italian red wines) but loved the food. Good service too!

This place was close to our hotel, so we decided to try it; we were so surprised as to how good it was! Italian pasta made fresh; service was excellent and it was a cozy place. Definitely would recommend it.

We are here as a party of 10. The staff were fantastic and are a real credit to the owners. Professional, attentive yet warm and approachable. The food matched, home made and delicious. Decent sized portions too. So glad we found this gem of a place!

We decided to try this restaurant for breakfast after reading every menu for all those recommended by our hotel and we were so glad we did. The lady who runs the place is so accomodating and friendly, and the food was fantasic. The vegetarian full breakfast was amazing, with vegetarian haggis, two huge slices of sourdough toast and really good... More

Upon recommendation from a local we had our last dinner in Edinburgh at this lovely little gem. What a delight! The food was delicious, the atmosphere relaxed, and the desserts devine. So many little cafes offer just ordinary... not here. Wish we would have found it earlier. The risotto's are a must try.

We've lunched here twice now and plan to go back for our next monthly meeting. The food is just delicious. This time the spinach and ricotta ravioli was divine and the puddings are just fabulous. Panna cotta with plum was our favourite but a gin panna cotta was also superb. The lunch menu is roughly 2 courses for £10 do... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
